Rangers Can’t win at Home in Sixth Straight against Hurricanes

After a great road trip, they fell again at home

New York, NY- The New York Rangers returned to Madison Square Garden after a successful Alberta/Pacific Northwest road trip. After another strong defensive performance, the Rangers once again couldn’t score any goals, and by the end of the game, they just felt frustrated and defeated, as they fell to the Carolina Hurricanes by a final score of three to nothing.

Hurricanes convert on the power play

After winning the draw at the far faceoff circle, the Hurricanes were able to set up quickly. Sebastian Aho passed the puck back to the far point toward Sean Walker, then gave it to Nikolaj Ehlers at the far boards. Then Ehlers ripped a shot that deflected off the post and past Igor Shesterkin at 13:30 of the first period.

The Rangers tried to get something going, but were unsuccessful. Then the Hurricanes skated toward the Rangers’ zone. Mark Jankowski at the near point found Mike Reilly, who quickly gave the puck to Walker at the far point and wristed a clean shot into the net at 17:07 of the second period.

At the same time as the shot was taken, Shesterkin got bumped into by his own man, and he lost sight of the puck that went inside the back post and a two-goal lead.

Seth Jarvis scored the empty net goal at 18:21 of the third period to finish it up, as the Rangers looked lifeless halfway through the final period. Frustrated, upset, and disgusted that after a strong road trip, they can’t find any luck at home inside Madison Square Garden. They have now been shut out four times in six games, and the fans are getting restless.

Pyotr Kochetkov made all 25 saves for the shutout. Even though the Hurricanes came in banged up and missing several players, their defense stopped the Rangers from denting the scoreboard.

“I thought the first period was an excellent first period. I thought we had a fairly strong second period as far as control and territory. We spent a significant amount of time in the offensive zone. I don’t think we got as many quality looks in the second period as we did in the first, but I thought, as far as, you know, controlling territory and playing on top of them, I thought, you know, for the most part, it was pretty solid there also.

You know, you look at it, for me, a big part of the game was the net fronts. You know, I think we could have done a better job offensively in fighting for, you know, fighting for the blue paint, making the sight lines difficult, getting some sticks on pucks. You know, when you look at the nature of the goals that were scored against us, you know, a power play goal, that’s a wrist shot from the perimeter and a sifter from the blue line off a faceoff with people at the net.

You know, when you look around the league and you watch how goals are scored around the league, there’s a fair amount of goals that are being scored with, you know, that type of a net presence. So your ability to win the net fronts, you know, at both ends of the rink is an important element of it, and I thought that was the difference in the game tonight,” said Mike Sullivan
