Down by two after two periods, and a big comeback victory in the extra period
Edmonton, AB- The New York Rangers returned to the province of Alberta after their two goal shutout victory at the Canucks, as they faced the two-time Western Conference Champion Edmonton Oilers. After going down after the second period, a gritty and gutty third, along with a strong overtime period, gave the Rangers a much-needed two points as they won it by a final of four to three.
First Period: Two Goals in a minute plus apart
The Oilers had possession of the puck and passed it around inside the Rangers’ zone. Evan Bouchard tried to pass it from the near point to the far point, but Johnny Brodzinski intercepted it and went on a breakaway chance. Got in front of the net, made a nice backhand move to score at 5:44 of the first period.
Edmonton quickly tied the game up when they entered the Rangers’ zone. They had the puck down low. Jack Roslovic at the far corner went back toward the top of the slot, found Jake Walman, who quickly passed to the near post to Darnell Nurse, as he rips one past Shesterkin at 6:51 of the first period
Second Period: Oilers getting the bounces
Edmonton takes advantage on the Power Play, when Leon Draisaitl held the puck skating up the far side. A quick low pass to Adam Henrique, then a quick pass from him toward the near post as Matt Savoie was in position to score the goal, but the puck deflected off his shin and in at 8:48 of the second period
Nurse would earn his second goal of the game and give the Oilers a three-to-one lead. Walman gave the puck to Howard at the near boards, then he gave it to Nurse at the near post. Tried to take a quick shot, but Shesterkin looked like he made the save and drifted into his net at 6:48 of the second period.
But there was a review two minutes later from the Review Center in Toronto; the overhead camera inside the net showed the puck was loose and landed on the top of the left pad of Shesterkin. Igor was not aware that the puck was on top of his pad and drifted into his net, forcing the entire puck to cross the goal line and counted at 8:48 of the second period.
Third Period: The Comeback begins
The Rangers took the second intermission to reset themselves and came back fighting in this game. They cut the deficit to one when Urho Vaakanainen retrieved the puck to the near point. Will Cuylle picked it up and started skating toward the Oilers’ net. His shot was blocked, but Braden Schneider trailed the play and put the rebound in at 8:18 of the third period.
The Ranger tied it up when Evan Bouchard was the culprit again. This time, he gave the puck up to Conor Sheary at the blueline on the near side. Entered the zone, saw Taylor Raddysh trailing, made the pass, then Raddysh snapped a hard shot that beat Stuart Skinner, and the game was tied at three at 12:04 of the third period.
Overtime winner for the Captain
The Rangers had to survive a carry-over power play when Mika Zibanejad was called for a high stick. Thankfully, no blood came, and it was a two-minute minor. After the Rangers killed it off, they got the chance to score the game-winner when Alexis Lafreniere gave the puck to Schnedier in their zone and sprung J.T. Miller down the near side. He cut in front of Skinner and scored the winner at 2:49 of OVertime
Shesterkin had a solid game
Igor Shesterkin found ways to keep the Rangers in this game when they were down by two. Strong pad saves, solid positioning, and did excellently all game long. He made 33 saves out of 36 shots on goal to get the win, and now the Rangers will head back to the States, but will visit the Seattle Kraken on Saturday night, November 1st, to finish up this road trip.
“Towards the end of the second period, when we got our, you know, that power play, it was deflating for the group. I think, you know, I could sense that our top people that were on the power play were frustrated, and, you know, it kind of sucked the life out of our team there, and we kind of lost our way for the rest of that period.
So I just talked to them about resetting their mindset. You know, it doesn’t always go your way, and you’ve got to make sure that you dig in and you don’t become your own worst opponent by allowing your frustration to get the best of you. It was about a reset and going out and digging in. If we get the next goal, we get it in striking distance,” said Mike Sullivan.
