Three straight wins to end it against the Kraken
Seattle, WA- The New York Rangers finished their Pacific Northwest/Alberta road trip with a flourish when they visited the Seattle Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena. Not only did they see their former Teammates in Kappo Kakko & Ryan Lindgren, but they dominated the majority of the game with zone time, puck possession, and shots on goal. But it took them to win the game in overtime as the Rangers finished it off with six out of eight points by a final score of three to two.
Gavrikov’s first as a Ranger
Johnny Brodzinski had the puck as he skated behind the net and toward to far boards. Passed it back to the far point to Adam Fox, then he passed it to the near point to Vladislav Gavrikov. A quick wrist shot that fluttered toward the net, but the Kraken goalie, Joey Daccord, misplayed the puck, and it went past him off his glove at 10:16 of the first period.
Kraken tie it up on the power play
The Kraken were on the power play. Eeli Tolvanen, at the near faceoff circle, passed the puck back to the top of the Rangers’ zone. Receiving the puck was Vicne Dunn, then he found Chandler Stephenson at the far faceoff circle and hammered home the shot to tie the game at 12:49 of the first period.
Laba does it again
The Rangers intercepted the puck in center ice and went on a three-on-two breakaway. Alexis Lafreniere down the middle, passed to the near side to Will Cuylle, who took the shot. Daccord made the save, but left a juicy rebound for Noah Laba to skate in while being defended, and he swept in the rebound at 13:50 of the first period.
Taking advantage of tired legs
The Kraken were cycling around the Rangers’ zone, and they started to get tired legs as their shift went past two minutes. That gave the home team the advantage to score the tying goal again. Stephenson had the puck, then found Jaden Schwartz at the far corner. He saw Brandon Montour coming off the bench for a change, as he trailed the play. Passed it back toward him, and Montour ripped a shot at 6:59 of the second period.
Overtime Winner again
The Rangers and the Kraken didn’t score in the third period; that was the goalie show. But in overtime, the Rangers once again took advantage of a two-on-one situation. Fox led J.T. Miller with a brilliant pass down the far side. Will Cullye, skating down the near side, took the pass from Miller, and he snapped it home at 2:42 to take the win and a big celebration at the end boards.
Strong game from start to finish
This was the best game the Rangers played on this four-game road trip. They were dominating puck possession, they took multiple shots, and they limited the number of chances the Kraken had, as they never had a second or third attempt. At times, they never had a first attempt to get a shot on the net. Igor Shesterkin made 11 saves out of 13 shots on goal to get the win.
“I thought tonight might have been our best, just as far as control and territory, defending hard, limiting shot quantity and quality. I thought it was a complete effort by everybody. All four lines were involved, and I thought we had good flow. So there was no thought of tweaking lines or anything of that nature. I thought Mika’s line was dominant all night long.
They did everything but put the puck in the net. The power play was the same. They had so many good looks, so I give the guys a lot of This is not an easy trip to come. out here, and we lost the first game in Calgary. And to rebound the way we did just speaks volumes, I think, for the character of the guys.
And you can feel the energy around me I feel like we’ve earned our swagger back through our own sweat equity. And that was something that we talked to the group about, and making sure that we all just invest in playing the right way,” said Head Coach Mike Sullivan
