Rangers Burned in Calgary by the Flames

Bad decisions led the Rangers to a loss in Alberta

Calgary, AB- The New York Rangers started their Western Canadian trip to Southern Alberta as they took on the Calgary Flames. As the team tried to work hard on making this game competitive, simple mistakes were made and allowed the Flames to take advantage to give the Rangers their first loss in regulation, as the Flames won this game with the final score of five to one.

First Period: Behind the eight ball

It looked as if the Rangers got a break when Joel Hanley’s shot missed the net from the near faceoff circle, but the puck rimmed around to the far boards, picked up by Nazem Kadri. He gave the puck to Jonathan Huberdeau, then got the puck back and snapped a high shot to beat Shesterkin at 1:42 of the first period.

Then the Rangers went down by two goals when Kadri skated into the zone. He saw Morgan Frost at the far boards and passed the puck to him. Then he saw Kevin Bahl trailing in and passed it to him. Bahl snapped the shot on net, but Igor Shesterkin was screened by his own man, Alexis Lafreniere, and missed it at 9:21 of the first period.

Congratulations Laba

The Ranges quickly got on the board and cut the deficit in half. Vladislav Gavrikov, inside his own blueline, passed the puck to the far boards at Will Cuylle. Then a quick flick to Noah Laba and down the far side he went. Laba got to the net and made a quick snapshot to beat Dustin Wolf at 9:31 of the first Period

Second Period: Bad shot leads to a goal

The Rangers had a chance to tie the game at two, but Brennan Othmann’s pass for the shot was missed, which led to a quick breakaway goal. Joel Farabee cleared the puck to Connor Zary, attacking down the near side, and made a quick pass to Yegor Sharangovich. His shot was stopped, but the momentum of the puck bounced off Shesterkin’s left arm and into the net at 12:28 of the second period.

Third Period: The game is lost.

The Rangers finally got their first power play of the game, but when a pass to Mika Zibanejad came to the far point, Zibanejad missed the puck completely. That led to a two-on-one as Mikael Backlund made the pass to Blake Coleman and snapped a shot to beat Shesterkin short-handed at 6:42 of the third period.

Mike Sullivan was very upset during that power play as Lafreniere was hooked, and there was no call by the referees. He felt the Rangers should’ve had a two-man advantage on the power play, but it wasn’t called.

Coleman gets his second

The Flames got another one late when they defended the Rangers’ attack in their zone. Backlund got the puck and sent Coleman up the rink down the near boards. As the Rangers defenders came back to stop Coleman, his shot deflected off Lafreniere and past Shesterkin at 14:27 of the third period.

The Rangers couldn’t get a second goal past Dustin Wolf as he made 30 Saves out of 31 shots on goal. While they had some solid chances, finishing them was lacking, and now they begin this road trip in Western Canada with a loss.

“We’re not at our best right now, and we’ve got to find a way to dig our way out of it,” head coach Mike Sullivan said. “It starts with effort and just attention to detail on the defensive side. I thought for a lot of this year, we had done a real good job at controlling the defensive side of the puck and limiting not only quality of chances, but quantity of chances. I thought tonight, the types of mistakes we made, they’re egregious, and they’re really hard to recover from.”
