Poor play in overtime leads the Rangers to five straight losses at the Garden
New York, NY- The New York Rangers hosted the winless San Jose Sharks at Madison Square Garden, but the Rangers haven’t won at home either. After a poor first period, a better second, but allowing a late goal. Then, tying the game in the third period, they fell in Overtime by a final score of six to five, and the Rangers have lost five straight at home to start the season.
Hat Tricks galore
One player on both teams scored a hat trick in this game, as Macklin Celebrini of the Sharks and Taylor Raddysh of the Rangers. Celebrini got lucky on his first goal when Matthew Robertson’s stick broke on his shot, and the puck rolled into the net while the blade of Robertson’s stick led to the net on the power play at 6:17 of the first period, then two late goals at the end of the first and second periods.
Raddysh’s hat trick was a goal a period. He received the puck at the near point and gave a hard wrist shot that deflected off a Sharks defenseman at 6:17 of the first period, then a shorthanded unassisted goal at 12:10 of the second period, and finally the last one as the Rangers were down by a goal and Raddysh comes off the bench, received a pass from J.T. Miller and slaps it hard at 11:50 of the third period.
Poor opening period
The Rangers didn’t have that jump they needed to be ready for this game. Allowed the Sharks to buzz around inside their zone, cycling around their net, and then allowing a goal by Adam Gaudette at 1:58 of the first period. While the Rangers did get back into the first period after Raddysh’s goal, they put themselves behind the eight ball early.
Even a fight led by Matt Rempe, taking on former Ranger Ryan Reaves, was a hell of a tussle. Sadly for Rempe, that five minutes for fighting penalty took him out of the game with an upper-body injury.
A better second period
The Rangers rebooted their game plan between periods in the first intermission, then they exploded for three straight goals and came back to take the lead. Mika Zibanejad ripped a hard shot from a great pass by Alexis Lafreniere on the power play at 4:04.
Their next goal to tie the game came from a rush by Conor Sheary down the near side. Sheary held up his rush and saw Jusso Parssinen trailing the play. Sheary makes a hard pass to Parssinen, then a fantastic move, while holding the puck, then a juke to his left, and then an open net to give Parssinen the goal at 6:47.
Then Raddysh took advantage while the Sharks were on the power play. Macklin Celebrini lost control of the puck at the far point and allowed and attacked down the far side to give the Rangers a lead, till the end of the second period, when Celebrini tied it at four.
Not a power play goal, but the Sharks retook the lead
The Rangers took two penalties, just six seconds apart. They were down two men and did a fantastic job killing off the two-man advantage, and it felt as if that would’ve given the Rangers a boost, but they still allowed the go-ahead goal at the time when Will Smith took advantage of an open net at 6:31 of the third period.
Poor overtime period
The Rangers lost it in overtime, when they had the opening possession of the puck, and never took a shot on net. They entered and re-entered the zone one to two times, but never showed any threat. Then the Sharks took their chance and converted when Will Smith took a pass from Celebrini and snapped a high shot to win the game at 1:38 of the overtime period.
“It was very disappointing. This is a good league, and there are good players on every team. If you don’t bring a certain diligence to your game every night, you run the risk of getting beat. You’re more than likely will. It’s a lack of awareness. Situational play, managing the game the right way. You know, controlling those situations is how you win. We obviously have to learn how to win.
Look at our last two outings, and you know that’s not the game that we want to put on the ice every night that we think will give us a chance to win, that’s for sure. You know, you can’t play, you can’t play two-thirds of a game. Or half of a game and think you’re going to win consistently.
And the last two games, that’s what we did. And the other element of it is, I don’t think we played nearly as smart. You know, the discipline and the diligence that we’ve put in from day one at training camp and becoming a harder team to play against and priding ourselves in a commitment to play defense. A lot of that starts up the ice with your decisions that you make with and without the puck.
You know, I thought you know we were chasing offense so much. We left ourselves vulnerable on the other side. We gave up I don’t know how many odd man rushes, but more than we’ve had in the whole year. And I think it’s a result of chasing offense. And I think when you start to chase the game, you know, it just makes it hard to win,” said Mike Sullivan
