Another Strong two periods, and then flopped in the third again
New York, NY- Second preseason game at Madison Square Garden and third for the Rangers as they faced the New York Islanders. After fighting back and taking a lead, the Rangers switched goaltenders, and they fell off a cliff again. These types of losses will not stand with Head Coach Mike Sullivan in the regular season, as the Islanders won 5-4.
Rangers down by two to start
Deflected pucks and soft goaltending from Jonathan Quick as the Islanders took advantage of the Rangers. A clear attempt was kept inside the zone and at the far boards by Sean Day, a quick pass to Gleb Veremyev deflected it in at 14:23 of the first period.
The Islanders made two when they kept the puck in the zone. Quick was a bit overaggressive, leaving his crease. When the puck got to Chris Terry, he caught Quick’s pads separated and stuffed it in through the five hole at the near post at 14:46.
Trocheck starts the comeback
Alexis Lafreniere skates at the far boards, passes the puck to Adam Fox at the far point. When Fox shot the puck, Vincent Trocheck got the blade of his stick to deflect the puck past David Rittich underneath his right shoulder at 15:02 of the first period.
Othmann rings in the tying goal
The Rangers went on the power play, passing the puck around. Conor Sheary put the puck back to the near point toward Scott Morrow. Found Brennan Othmann at the near-side faceoff circle. Snapped a hard shot that rang the near post and in to tie the game at 17:21 of the first period.
Rangers take the lead
Sheary skated toward the end boards at the far side to stop the puck from rimming around the boards. Passed it back toward Noah Laba, who is having a strong preseason. Sets up behind the net, with a quick backhand pass toward Brett Berard, and quickly stuffs it in at 17:33 of the first period.
Another Ranger Power Play Goal
Mika Zibanejad kept the puck in the zone at the far point on the power play. Sent a quick pass down low to Trocheck. He saw New Rangers Captain J.T. Miller inside the slot. A quick pass and a quick shot gave the Rangers a two goal lead and their second power play goal at 10:17 of the second period.
The downfall again
Dylan Garand took over for Quick, and unfortunately, the lead was lost for the Rangers. A shot from Cameron Berg deflected off of Garand’s arm at 6:59 of the third period. Then the tying goal by Veremyev, who got his second of the game, outmuscled Adam Fox in front of the crease to tap in a bouncing puck at 15:17 of the third period.
Then the winner from Kyle Palmieri, received the puck inside his own zone, and skated down toward the Rangers’ zone. As he cut toward the far side, he got toward the far post. He made a backhand shot that somehow weakly beat Garand and gave the Islanders the win at 16:14 of the third period.
While it’s not the full team for the Rangers, and they are creating chances, scoring timely goals, they can’t continue to have late-period meltdowns. Once cuts are made and some will make the move to Hartford of the AHL, these issues have to be taken care of as soon as possible, or it could leak into the regular season.
