Rookies get their first chance and convert several times for the win
Newark, NJ- The New York Rangers started their preseason schedule on the road at the Rock as they headed to the Prudential Center in Downtown Newark. While none of the heavy hitters were playing in this opening game, the players who are either destined for Broadway or down in Hartford of the AHL got their chance to show something to new head coach Mike Sullivan. It was a 5-3 Preseason victory for the Rangers.
Gabe Perrault is showing what he can do
The Rangers cycled down low in the Devils’ zone, working the body to shield the puck and creating passing lanes. As Casey Fitzgerald skated toward the back of the net, a quick pass from the far side to a wide-open Gabe Perrault in front of the net, as he beat Nico Daws to the blocker side at 3:12 of the first period.
Matt Rempe with an assist?
Matt Rempe showed some improved play by muscling through the defenders as he took the puck and attacked the net. Made a move, but couldn’t convert, yet Dylan Roobroeck got to the loose puck and found a way to score to make it two to one at 3:11 of the second period.
Sheary is on the breakaway
The Rangers continued to battle at the Devils’ blue line. Jusso Parssinen took the puck and sent Conor Sheary into a breakaway. Snapped a hard shot into the upper far corner and beat Daws for the Rangers’ third goal of the game at 11:45 of the second period.
Point Shot deflection
Noah Laba took a hit at the end boards, but moved the puck toward Anton Blidh at the near corner. Then a pass back to the near point toward the newly picked up defenseman, Scott Morrow. As he took the shot, the puck deflected off a Devils defender in front, then in at 13:29 of the second period.
Here’s Johnny
Roobroeck sent the puck to the far point, finding Uhro Vaakanainen. At the far boards, Vaakanainen snapped a quick shot on goal, but the shot hit the defender. It ricocheted toward Johnny Brodzinsky, as he snapped a quick shot past Daws at 16:53 of the second period.
Even though the Devils did score a late power play goal in the third period, it was already over as the Rangers are heading back to the Garden for their next two preseason games. Both Jonathan Quick and Dylan Garand had some solid moments sharing the net in this game, but so far, some players have shown some positives.
The Rangers’ next preseason game is back at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, September 23rd at 7:00 PM on MSG Network.
