Rangers drop home preseason game to Bruins after great start

Rangers flop in the third period after five strong periods.

New York, NY- The Rangers made their Madison Square Garden preseason debut as they took on the Boston Bruins. After playing two strong periods, the Rangers lost it in the third, then overtime as they fell to the Bruins by a final of five to four.

Tying the game up in the first

The Rangers were down a goal to the Bruins, but found a way to keep the puck in their zone. Noah Laba picked up the loose puck near the blueline, found Brett Berard, who made a quick pass to Trey-Fix Wolansky, beating the goalie at 9:14 of the first period.

Gabe Perrault does it again

The Rangers stopped the Bruins just outside of the Boston blueline while making a change. As soon as Gabe Perrault got on the ice, accepted the pass, skated in, and scored his second consecutive preseason goal at 3:25 of the second period.

Sam Carrick takes advantage

The Bruins skated with the puck inside their zone to attempt a breakout toward the Rangers’ zone, but as the pass went toward Dalton Bancroft, he forgot to pick up the puck, allowing Sam Carrick to intercept, make a few dekes, and score at 9:53 of the second period.

Going Short-handed

The Rangers committed the first penalty of the game, putting the Bruins on the power play. Matej Blumel at the near boards lost the puck to Laba. The Rangers attacked short-handed, passed to the trailing Vladislav Gavrikov, then snapped it home at 11:08 of the second period.

Eyssimont doubles short-handed

The Bruins got back into the game, going short-handed twice. The next two goals were courtesy of Michael Eyssimont as he jumped right away to take advantage. He stole the puck from Adam Fox inside the Rangers’ zone to beat Talyn Boyko over his shoulder at 7:05 of the third period.

Then he scored another short-handed goal as Jordan Harris intercepted the puck at the far boards, made a quick pass toward Eyssimont along the near post, and again he snapped a high shot under the crossbar at 11:11 of the third period.

The Bruins tie it late

With the Bruins bringing in the extra attacker, they held the puck inside the Rangers’ zone. Casey Mittelstadt was along the near boards, passed the puck down low toward Eyssimont, then his pass to Marat Khusnutdinov in front of the net, beats Boyko at 18:55 of the third period to tie the game and force overtime.

The Bruins win it in overtime

Khusnutdinov passed the puck to Nikita Zadorov, skating down on a breakaway. He had a defender on him as he reached in front of the net, then circled away. He got to a better position inside the far faceoff circle and wristed the shot to beat Boyko for the overtime winner at 3:25.

Poor finish

Mike Sullivan needs to make sure that this type of game never happens again. This is still preseason, with the hope that the Rangers will learn not to have another letdown after a dominating two periods, only to fall midway through the third. There are positives to take away from the game, such as Noah Laba and Gabe Perreault, but until we reach opening night, there are still four games remaining in the preseason.
