QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John’s women’s soccer delivered a masterclass in defensive organization, shutting down Boston College’s high-powered offense in a 0-0 draw at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Red Storm’s disciplined performance neutralized an Eagles attack that had been averaging 2.4 goals per game.
Bower Anchors Defensive Masterpiece
Senior goalkeeper Kayla Bower was the star of the afternoon, making four crucial saves to earn her fifth shutout performance this season. The Lincoln Park, N.J., native has now made 31 saves through seven games, establishing herself among the nation’s elite keepers.
“As a team, we all just came together and were able to motivate each other and inspire each other to work hard,” Bower said postgame. “All of us were making big plays on the field, which overall just helped us keep the energy up.”
Head coach Ian Stone praised his goalkeeper’s leadership and development: “Kayla’s just a whole different level of confidence as opposed to what she’s been like in the past. She’s been phenomenal, and not just making big saves but also organizing and communicating.”
Tactical Triumph Against ACC Power
The Red Storm’s defensive structure completely neutralized Boston College’s attacking threats, most notably limiting star forward Sophie Reale to just one shot on goal across the entire match. The Eagles managed 10 total shots but struggled to create quality chances against St. John’s organized defense.
“That type of performance defensively has been coming together,” Stone explained. “It was really a connected group that made big play after big play, whether that be Kayla in goal, Emily, center backs, Leah as a left back. When we play like that, we tend to inspire each other.”

Key Moments Define Match
The game’s pivotal moment came in the 57th minute when Bower made a spectacular leaping save, batting the ball over the crossbar to preserve the scoreless tie. Later, in the 81st minute, the Red Storm defensive wall came up with a crucial block on a Boston College free kick just outside the penalty area.
St. John’s had their best scoring opportunity in the 88th minute when Daniela Monzon unleashed a strike from 20 yards out, but Eagles goalkeeper Olivia Shippee made the save to preserve the draw.
Statistical Dominance
The numbers tell the story of St. John’s defensive excellence:
- Boston College: 10 shots, 4 on target, 10 corner kicks
- St. John’s: 7 shots, 3 on target, 3 corner kicks
- Possession: Boston College 58%, St. John’s 42%
Despite being outshot and having less possession, the Red Storm’s efficiency in defensive transitions and set-piece defending frustrated the Eagles throughout.
Building Toward Big East Play
The result serves as perfect preparation for St. John’s as they enter Big East conference play. The Red Storm finished non-conference action with a 2-3-2 record and will face UConn in their conference opener on Saturday night in Storrs.
“I think that BC is similar to the teams that we play in the Big East,” Bower noted. “This game was a good game to help us prepare for UConn next weekend.”
Stone emphasized the importance of the performance for his young squad: “People need to mature quickly because it’s a young group. I think today was that day where everything kind of came together.”
Defensive Leadership Emerges
The match showcased the development of St. John’s defensive leadership, particularly from Bower in her senior season. Stone has challenged his goalkeeper to be more aggressive in organizing the backline and pushing defensive players into optimal positions.
“Considering how young our team is, I just really need to be like a big presence in the back and help lead freshmen and the sophomores,” Bower explained. “A lot of them have never played in these positions or situations before.”
Looking Ahead
The scoreless draw against a quality ACC opponent provides significant momentum as St. John’s prepares for Big East competition. The defensive foundation established in this match will be crucial as they face conference rivals who present similar attacking challenges.
“When that whole group on the field, on the bench, is as connected as they were today, that’s gonna be a fun Big East season coming ahead,” Stone concluded.
The Red Storm will travel to face UConn on Saturday at 7 p.m., carrying the confidence of a defensive performance that proved they can compete with elite programs.
