Portland, OR.- Poor concentration leads to another poor performance of a road match
The New York Red Bulls had a major opportunity to get a win and leap over the Chicago Fire after their 3-1 loss at home to NYCFC. They were facing a Portland Timbers side that was on a five match winless streak. Once again, they weren’t ready to play, and it cost them dearly as the Portland Timbers took the victory by a final score of two goals to one.
Coronel has cement shoes
The Timbers were inside the Red Bulls’ area as they were attempting to get the ball in the net. Matais Rojas camped underneath the ball and headed it toward the upper far 90 in a harmless fashion. Red Bulls keeper Carlos Coronel watched the ball float in the air. Instead of grabbing the ball, he allowed it to drop behind him and allowed the Timbers to score in the 28th minute.
Coronel assumed the ball was out of play over the end line when the cross was made toward Rojas, but he was mistaken, as the net cam replay showed the ball along the far side was inside the end line, and the goal was allowed to stand.
The Captain comes up with an equalizer
Red Bulls earned their equalizing goal as they kept attacking the area. They made several passes at the top of the area until Emil Forsberg received the ball, stayed onside, and scored the tying goal in the 70th minute.

Poor midfield defense strikes again
The Red Bulls lost concentration again, allowing the Timbers to attack. Juan Mosquera started everything down the far side, found Kevin Kelsy as he crossed the ball toward the near post, and found Antony scoring in the 73rd minute.
“Yeah, I think it’s really tough to lose this game. And I would say the first half, we had some moments in the final third where we didn’t play clean enough and didn’t take the shot in some moments. And so, they had some moments as well. Portland, then we conceded too easily. The first goal was one situation, our box defending. Then there was this header in the corner. And then second half, we played very dominantly, in my opinion.
And then some moments, some situations in the final third, and we scored the goal. And for me to be honest, it’s then how we lost directly after we scored the goal, these three four minutes, the rhythm of the game, not to create our momentum. And I think this is the important part, to feel the momentum in game, especially today, in this game against Portland.
And we had in the first half some moments, but when you scored the goal, and then you have to feel the rhythm, you have to feel the momentum, and not then that you lose the focus, that you lose easily the ball. And then they scored the second goal, and we tried, then at the end, everything so but at the end, we lost on the road again,” said Sandro Schwarz
