WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth University extended their winning streak to five games with a 2-0 victory over St. John’s University at Hesse Field on Sunday afternoon, as Summer Reimet’s brace proved the difference in a hard-fought contest.
Early Strike Sets the Tone
The Hawks (5-2, 0-0 CAA) wasted no time establishing their dominance, taking the lead just 1:35 into the match. Lindsey Husic delivered a perfectly weighted cross that found Reimet, who unleashed a powerful strike into the bottom right corner to give Monmouth an early 1-0 advantage.
The early goal forced St. John’s (2-3, 0-0 Big East) to chase the game from the opening minutes, setting up a tactical battle that would define the remainder of the contest.
Bower Stands Tall Despite Defeat
St. John’s senior goalkeeper Kayla Bower delivered another outstanding performance, recording a career-high six saves to keep her team in contention throughout the match. The Lincoln Park, N.J., native has now reached or set a new career-high in saves in four of St. John’s five matches this season, averaging an impressive 4.8 saves per appearance.
Bower’s most spectacular save came in the 70th minute when she made a diving stop to deny Monmouth and preserve St. John’s hopes of finding an equalizer.
Red Storm Create Chances
Despite falling behind early, St. John’s showed resilience and created several scoring opportunities throughout the match. Sophomore Madison Mariani led the offensive charge with a team-high three shots, including two on target, as she continues her strong start to the season with two goals and four points.
The Red Storm’s best chance came in the 42nd minute when Snæfríður Eva Eiriksdóttir delivered a cross toward the far post that nearly found Jaylen Vallecillo in front of an open net.

Second Half Push Falls Short
St. John’s emerged from halftime with renewed energy, as Hope Van Tuyle and Leana Ruiz both tested Monmouth goalkeeper Tallulah Miller with quality strikes in the opening minutes of the second half.
However, Monmouth’s defensive organization and Miller’s steady goalkeeping (four saves) kept the Red Storm at bay despite sustained pressure.
Late Insurance Goal Seals Victory
With St. John’s pushing forward in search of an equalizer, Monmouth capitalized on their possession in the attacking third during the final 10 minutes. Reimet completed her brace with just 27 seconds remaining, converting another assist from Husic to double the Hawks’ lead and secure the 2-0 victory.
The goal capped off a dominant performance from the Reimet-Husic combination, with Husic providing both assists in a display of creative playmaking.
Looking Ahead
The loss represents a setback for St. John’s as they prepare for Big East conference play. The Red Storm will look to bounce back when they return home to host FDU on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
For Monmouth, the victory continues their impressive early-season form as they build momentum heading into CAA competition. The Hawks’ balanced attack and solid defensive play suggest they could be a force to reckon with in conference play.
