Knicks Comeback Victory Wins the NBA Championship

The New York Knickerbockers came down to San Antonio, Texas, to face the San Antonio Spurs for the final time in this NBA Finals and, in a close, tight scoring game, rose to the top and won their first NBA Championship since the 1973 team that had Walt Frazier, Willis Reed, Dave DeBusschere, Earl Monroe, Bill Bradley, and Phil Jackson. Once again, they started from behind in the first quarter and continued to fight, scratch, and claw their way back into the lead, and at the death, took their first championship in 53 years. The final score for the Knicks to take the title was 94-90.

This was a tightly contested game as both teams played amazing defense and found ways to fight through tough blocks and tight fouls, battling till the final buzzer sounded. When it looked like the Knicks might have to come back to Madison Square Garden to play a game 6, they fought through it all and achieved the pinnacle of NBA History. It’s been an amazing run. They went from Game 4 of the first round all the way to winning the championship in five. Jalen Brunson wins Finals MVP, leading all scorers with 45 points, and the Knicks, as a team, had the other 49 points to win game 5.

Josh Hart earned a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Karl Anthony Towns fouled out of the game, only scoring 2 points, but pulled down 10 rebounds to help the Knicks win the championship. Dylan Harper, off the bench, led all Spurs and scored with 25 points. Victor Wembanyama was second with a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds

First Half: Shaky start for both teams, but the Spurs have the lead

Both teams made many misses in this game until the Spurs took control and started hitting jumpers and threes. While the Knicks did hit three-pointers, they were missing shots from inside the three-point line and started 0 for 10. But once the second quarter began, the Knicks started to get back into gear and started to climb back. They went on a 10-2 run with several shots from Brunson for three, and Josh Hart, especially when he hit a circus shot after getting shoved, got the foul, then, on a review from the officials, De’Aaron Fox, who shoved Hart, got a Flagrant, and the Knicks got possession back to hit a jumper from Mikal Bridges. When the Knicks cut the deficit to three, Vassel hit a buzzer beater to end the half and brought the lead back up to five.

Second Half: The Spurs once again lost the lead late and a chance at a championship for the Knicks

Another hard-fought battle to start the third quarter, and once again, Karl Anthony Towns, who carried two fouls from the first half, got tagged for another quick two fouls to put him to four personals, was forced to sit on the bench for the entire quarter. While the Knicks were hanging on and keeping the deficit down from double digits, there were still some calls not going their way. Brunson, who took a three-pointer, hit, but as he was landing, Wembanyama intentionally put his foot under Brunson to interfere with his landing spot, and the referees never called it. Mikal Bridges gets poked in the eye, and there’s no call there either. Regardless of the poor non-calls, the Knicks kept fighting.

Once the fourth quarter began, that was the signal for the Knicks to make their move and fight back. Brunson flipped the switch and put his team on his back and led them to a monster game. The 45 points he scored broke the record from Willis Reed, who had 38 points against the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1969-70 Championship. Big layups, huge three pointers, and crucial free throws. While Towns did foul out of the game inside the final minutes of the game, his teammates came up big to keep the team in front and won it by four points to win the NBA Championship.

History has been made in the NBA

Before the Knicks won the NBA Championship, earlier this season, the Knicks won their first championship during the in-season Emirates NBA Cup. Now, with the NBA Championship they just won, the New York Knicks have won a Double Championship inside the same season. The first time this has ever happened in the NBA, and this means when the Parade happens in the Canyon of Heroes, the Knicks should have both trophies on display on the floats.
