Late goal in the second and an early goal in the third cemented the win
Raleigh, NC- The New York Rangers made a trip down to the Carolinas as they headed down to the Lenovo Center to face the Carolina Hurricanes. It was a complete game, playing all three periods on the road and some solid golatending from Igor Shesterkin as the rangers defeat the Hurricanes by a final score of four to two.
Laba snaps one in
Matthew Robertson did a great job keeping the puck inside the Hurricanes’ zone at the near point. Skated down toward the net, swung the puck, but it went off the side of the cage. Picked up by Taylor Raddysh, who quickly found Noah Laba, came toward the slot, and snapped the shot inside the far post for the lead at 16:53 of the first period.
Hurricanes get one on the power play
After winning the draw at the far faceoff circle, the Hurricanes controlled the puck. At the far point, the puck was held by Nikolaj Ehlers, then he made the pass down the far boards to Sebastian Aho. He picked his head up and saw Shayne Gostisbehere moving in. He made the crossice pass just inside the near faceoff circle and one-timed it in at 5:04 of the second period.
Late goal on the faceoff
Vincent Trocheck won the faceoff at the far side faceoff circle and gave the puck to J.T. Miller. He quickly backhanded the puck to Adam Fox at the far point, then Fox made a hard pass to Artemi Panarin down low to the near side, forcing Frederik Anderson to go across the crease, and Panarin shot it quickly to retake the lead at 18:56 of the second period
The opening minute of the third
The Rangers broke out into a rush from their own zone. Mika Zibanejad sprung Panarin down the rink and inside the Hurricanes’ blueline. As he veered toward the near side, Trocheck was trailing the play. Panarin quickly passed him the puck, and Trocheck one-timed it past Anderson to get the two-goal lead at 45 seconds of the third period.
Hurricanes go short side on the second goal
The Hurricanes dumped the puck into the Rangers’ zone and chased it. Aho retrieved the puck at the end boards, skated around the near boards. Gave it to Gostisbehere at the top of the near faceoff circle, saw Seth Jarvis at the near side. got the puck and snapped it over Shesterkin’s right shoulder to cut the deficit to one at 10:53 of the third period.
An empty net and the victory
As the Hurricanes pulled Anderson for the extra attacker, the Rangers quickly ended this contest as Will Cuylle got the puck just behind the blue line and sent it all the way down into the empty net at 18:17. The Rangers are now on a two-game winning streak as Igor Shesterkin made 35 saves out of 27 shots on goal. A big win on the road against a tough Hurricanes team that plays very well.
” I thought it was a great start. I thought we started the game the right way, trying to play north-south, trying to play straight ahead, trying to put pucks behind them. When you play that way against a team like that that wants to try to play on top of you, you can take them out of the game they want to play. Then we got into penalty trouble, and I think the momentum changed. But I thought in the third period we did a better job getting back to playing straight ahead.”said Mike Sullivan.
