New York, NY – The No. 5 UConn Huskies (6-1) led wire-to-wire and knocked off No. 13 Illinois (6-2) 74-61 on Friday afternoon at the SentinelOne Showdown at Madison Square Garden, delivering a defensive masterclass that stifled one of the nation’s highest-scoring offenses.
NYC-native Malachi Smith (Bronx) had a huge game off the bench for the Huskies with 14 points and a game-high nine assists, also converting a game-sealing four-point play in the final minutes of regulation that effectively iced the contest.
“I didn’t know the shot clock was going off, so I just looked at the sideline,” Smith said postgame. “Everybody told me, ‘shoot it,’ and he fouled me. I started climbing straight at least a little bit, making it to the rim.”

Defensive Dominance
The Huskies turned in a terrific defensive performance in the win, stymying a high-powered Illinois offense that came in averaging nearly 95 points per game. UConn held the Fighting Illini to 32.1 percent shooting from the field (19-60) and a dismal 20.7 percent from three-point range (6-29).
“Making sure they don’t get open threes—I mean, they got lineups out there where all five guys can shoot threes,” said Alex Karaban, who finished with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds. “Making sure we scramble for each other, help each other out, and for the most part, we did a good job.”
In the second half, Connecticut held Illinois to a paltry 23.1 percent (6-26) from the field and 12.5 percent (2-16) from three-point range, completely shutting down the Illini’s offensive attack.
Balanced Offensive Attack
UConn finished +5 on the glass (43-38) and out-scored the Illini 31-11 in bench points. Five Huskies had at least eight points, and five recorded at least five rebounds in the balanced effort.
Solo Ball led Connecticut with 15 points and added five rebounds with two steals, while Karaban was the third in double-figures with 12 points. Eric Reibe provided crucial minutes off the bench with eight points and seven rebounds, including two critical offensive rebounds in the final minutes.
“They were good rebounds, just plays that we needed,” Smith said of Reibe’s effort. “Coach was always talking about making plays. He’s been doing a good job just making progress with that. We needed those two rebounds, especially in the close game.”
Game Flow
UConn took a lead on its first offensive possession and never relented. Ball and Karaban hit early 3-pointers to get the Huskies going and take a 6-2 lead. From 17:45 to 13:27 of the first half, UConn hit six-straight from the field, and a 10-0 run made it 23-12 with Ball’s four-point play at 12:05.
Jaylin Stewart drilled a transition 3-pointer at 8:03 of the first that brought the Garden crowd to its feet, part of an 8-0 run that put the Huskies up 36-22 for their largest lead of the opening stanza. The Huskies led by 11 at the break, 43-32, with Ball scoring 13 first-half points.
After a Ball bucket to open the second half, UConn missed its next seven from the field and Illinois crept closer before a Karaban bucket made it 48-38 at 16:10. That sparked an 11-2 run, and a Jayden Ross 3-pointer at 13:31 led to an Illinois timeout with the Huskies up 57-40 and MSG in a frenzy.
Back-to-back baskets from freshmen Braylon Mullins and Eric Reibe pushed the UConn lead over 20 for the first time with the Huskies going up 64-43 at 9:59 of the second.

Illinois Rally Falls Short
The Illini answered emphatically, going on an 11-0 run to pull within 10 and prompt a UConn timeout at 6:07 with the lead down to 64-54. A late 13-2 rally for the Illini got them back within seven at 66-59, but that was the closest it would ever come in the second half.
On the ensuing trip after Illinois cut it to seven, Smith banked home a deep 3-pointer and was fouled, converting the four-point play to put UConn up 70-59 with 2:10 to play.
Kylan Boswell led all scorers with 25 points for Illinois, and Tomislav Ivisic recorded an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double. UConn held Illinois’ leading scorer Andrej Stojakovic, who came into the game averaging 18.5 points on 58.8 percent shooting, to three points and 1-of-7 from the field in 25 minutes.
Hurley Praises Illinois, Reflects on Depth
Head coach Dan Hurley praised the Illinois program and expressed confidence in their potential despite the loss.
“Just play in Illinois, it’s a privilege. I get so much respect for Illinois, for Brad and the staff, and just the level of their program,” Hurley said. “I think they have as high a ceiling with their team as any team that we’ve played. Just like us, they got some stuff that they’ve got to figure out during the course of the year to reach their potential.”
Hurley also highlighted the importance of his team’s depth, particularly with Silas Demary Jr. facing foul trouble (19 minutes, three fouls) and the return of Tarris Reed Jr. and Braylon Mullins from injury.
“Going into the year, that was where our confidence about what we could potentially be at some point,” Hurley said. “We need Tarris healthy. This was a step for Braylon today to get 10 minutes under his belt. Tarris changes everything about our offense and defense.”
Reed Jr. saw his first game action since Nov. 15 and had five rebounds in 15 minutes, while Mullins made his UConn debut with two points and two rebounds in 10 minutes.
