Big third period gives the Rangers a second home win
New York, NY- The New York Rangers returned to Madison Square Garden for a brief home game as they hosted the St. Louis Blues. They played better and smoothly on the ice as they found the net a couple of times to finally break their four-game losing streak, defeating the Blues by a final score of three to two.
Quick shot goes to the Blues
The Blues were inside the Rangers’ zone, passing the puck around. Colton Parayko at the near boards passed the puck back to the top of the zone, finding Philip Broberg. He quickly passed it back to the far boards to Dylan Holloway, entered the faceoff circle, and snapped one past Shesterkin at 17:36 of the first period.
Stretching a rush
The Rangers were looking to get on the scoreboard and finally had a breakthrough. Adam Fox held the puck just behind his own blueline, made a hard, quick pass to Johnny Brodzinsky streaking in. Made a great pass to Vincent Trocheck to the near side and snapped it inside the near post at 10:06 of the second period.
Deflection for the lead
The opening minute of the third period put the Rangers into the lead. Will Cuylle chased after the puck at the near boards, made the pass to the near point at Vladislav Gavrikov. A hard shot went right at the net, but skating in front of the net to create a screen was Alexis Lafreniere, who found a way to get his stick to deflect it in and kept it below the crossbar at 40 seconds of the third period.
Big Eddie strikes again
The Rangers were looking for a two-goal lead. Fox was at the far point with the puck again. A streaking Gavrikov was headed to the far post from the near side. Fox sent it toward the net, but it deflected toward the end boards. It came back to Gavrikov, a quick back pass to Adam Edstrom, and he shot it quickly into the net at 8:56 of the third period.
Blues pulled one back, but it wasn’t enough
Brayden Schenn scored the Blues’ second goal at 18:45 of the third period. The Rangers played well to prevent the tying goal to get the win and their second on home ice. Igor Shesterkin made 17 saves out of 20 shots on goal to earn the win at Madison Square Garden.
“I thought we did a way better job just taking care of the puck. You know, and I thought we defended hard. You see, we had numbers back. It wasn’t perfect by any stretch, but I thought our intentions were in the right place. And as a result, I thought, you know, it was a much lower event game. You see, we weren’t trading chance for chance or opening the game up and giving, you know, a ridiculous amount of high-quality looks.
So, you know, you play the game the right way. You can create your offense through your defense. I thought we did a good job getting inside the offensive zone, just getting to the blue paint. Two of the goals, you know, Eddie’s goal and the last goal, just getting to the blue paint. That’s where the majority of the goals are scored in this league. It’s no secret. So I thought we did a better job on the offensive side, just trying to get inside a little bit more,” said Head Coach Mike Sullivan.
