The criticisms are loud, and the mistakes are glaring in Glenn’s Head Coaching Debut
Florham Park, NJ- These three games in Aaron Glenn’s head coaching career have had some ups but a lot of downs. While the fans have already pointed their fingers of blame, keeping track of all the negatives that have happened, there are more questions than answers when it comes to what’s going on inside the locker room.
Positives: A different attitude
Aaron Glenn has started the culture change inside the locker room. He’s making the players accountable for their mistakes, and when he needs to be a disciplinarian, he’s been able to inform the players of their critical mistakes. When he cut Xavier Gipson on his two fumbles on kickoff returns, yelling at Michael Clemons for his roughing the passer flag, and so on.
Being aggressive in the play calling
He wants to make things happen and push the players to attack on offense and defense. We have seen some exciting moments at times, and the players are responding to what Glenn and his staff want to do.
Negatives: Defense has been putrid
There’s no sugar coating this. The defensive schemes have been terrible, and the Jets have been leaking yards to their opposition for the first three games. While the defense has done decently in the middle of the field, the Jets are getting torched along the outside and near the sidelines. Blown coverage from the snap, and players colliding into each other, allowing chunk yardage for their opponents.
Reckless plays to get flagged for either roughing the passer, facemask calls, and multiple holding penalties. The main culprits have been Edge Rusher or lack thereof, Michael Clemons, and corner Brandon Stephens.
Glenn’s overaggressiveness
In two of the first three games, Aaron Glenn went overaggressive at the wrong times. Back to the season opener against the Steelers, when Nick Folk missed the extra point after the Garrett Wilson touchdown, but the Steelers were flagged for a procedure penalty. Glenn had the option to either retake the kick attempt or go for a two-point conversion. The decision to take the conversion attempt was at the wrong time in the opening quarter and wasn’t successful.
In the past game against the Buccaneers, the Jets had an advantage when the Bucs’ offensive line was called for three consecutive holding penalties that started on 3rd & 9 in the first quarter. Gleen kept accepting those holding penalties till it became 3rd & 39. All those plays were incomplete, as Glenn should’ve declined the third holding penalty to force the Bucs to punt the ball.
Instead, the Jets were flagged for a pass interference spot of the foul call and wiped out any hope of preventing the Bucs from reaching their endzone and earning any points on the board. They did convert a field goal to tie the game at three, but that should’ve stayed a 3-0 Jets lead.
Is it Glenn’s playbook or Wilks’ playbook
Right now, it’s not looking good for the defense as I have previously stated. Is this all of Aaron Glenn’s defensive schemes from Detroit, is it Wilks’ schemes, or has it been a combination of both? After some good was shown in Week 1 against the Steelers, the bottom seems to have fallen out very quickly in the last two games.
Even though Will McDonald and Special Teams made a miraculous play to block the field goal and helped the Jets tie the game and get the extra point for the lead, there was no hope that the Jets’ defense was going to prevent the Bucs from marching down the field and win the game on the final field goal attempt. Their defense can’t stop a nose bleed, let alone stop their opponents from running all over the field.
What’s the solution
While Aaron Glenn did have a solution for Gipson, he needs to find a solution for himself. At this point, he has to find a way to fix this defense, which means either burning down the defensive playbook or taking over the playcalling from Wilks. All these missed assignments are hurting the offense and the entire team from getting any wins for the 2025 season.
While Special Teams had a miraculous play to get the lead back for the Jets, they are not the sole reason they should be winning the games. That’s what your offensive unit is supposed to do, or you rely on your defense at the final possession for the opponents, to stop them from reaching a position to win the game. Glenn and his staff need to take a hard look at themselves to fix this solution and fast.
