Their worst match of the final round, but in the end get a lifeline
Guatemala City, Guatemala- Suriname was leading by a+3 on the goal differential at the top of Group A. All they needed to do was score enough goals to win the group and move on to their very first FIFA World Cup. But disaster struck in the second half, as Guatemala played spoiler to the Surinameians, until the back end of second half stoppage time, when they got a lifeline to the playoffs, but fell by a final score of three goals to one.
Fighting hard in the first half
Suriname started the opening half with a bang. ON the front foot and attacking every single moment they had the ball. Guatemala’s stingy defense and their goalkeeper, Nicholas Hagen, kept fighting hard to show some life to their fans as they were playing for pride and finding a way to knockout Suriname from their ticket to glory.
The start of the downfall
Guatemala has possession as they were trying to open the scoring. Oscar Santis at the near side touchline received the ball and started to move toward the Suriname area, delivering a beautiful cross inside to a running Darwin Lom. Lom got into the perfect position to place his head on the ball and beat Etienne Vassen in the 49th minute.
Stealing and scoring
Guatemala got its second goal of the match when they stole the ball inside the center circle. They made a push toward the area when Rudy Munoz attacked with the ball and delivered a good cross to the path of Olger Escobar, chipping it past Vassen and giving the fans something to shout about in the 57th minute.
Lom & Santis team up again
Guatemala, looking for a third to put the final nail in the coffin, did so when Lom sprung Santis into an attacking run. It was one defender trying to keep pace, and when Vassen came off his line to stop the attack, Santis went around Vassen, tapped it home into an open net, and the downfall was complete in the 65th minute.
Guatemala hands Suriname a lifeline
After regulation time, the fourth referee posted four minutes of second half stoppage time. Suriname is looking desperate to get that important goal to put them into the intercontinental playoffs. But in the third minute of four, that miracle came to fruition, when Suriname had the ball at the near side.
Sheradio Becker delivered a cross to the middle of the area, then out of nowhere, Guatemalan defender Nicolas Samayoa tried to head the ball away, but instead he headed the ball into his own goal, and that was the moment Suriname earned their lifeline toward the intercontinental playoffs in Mexico.
Final results
Panama hosted El Salvador destroyed them by a final score of three goals to nil, and on the final day of the final round of qualifying, took over the top of the group and qualified for the World Cup. In Group C, Honduras ended their match with a scoreless draw against Costa Rica in the Ticos National Stadium and failed to qualify.
Even on points with Suriname, even on goal differential with a plus three, but Suriname scored more goals with nine, as Honduras scored five. A plus four advantage for the Dutch country of South America. They have now been drawn in the playoffs against Bolivia, and the winner will face Iraq for one of the two final spots for the World Cup.
Those matches will be during the March International Window of 2026, along with the European Playoffs from UEFA. At the end of this final round of qualifying road trip, Suriname has nobody to blame but themselves. They had their tickets in their hand and dropped them at the wrong time. But now they have one or possibly two matches remaining to make a second attempt to qualify for next summer.
