Willemstad, Curacao- Haiti continues to use Curacao’s National Stadium as they can’t play home matches in their country, due to the current situation. But that’s not stopping them from attempting to qualify for the FIFA World Cup for the first time since the 1974 edition. They hosted Costa Rica and shocked the Ticos as they only needed one tally to defeat them by a final score of one goal to nil.
Late goal in the opening half
Haiti attacked with the ball as Josue Casimir went down the near side and delivered a fantastic pass to Ruben Providence. As he ran inside the area, Providence made the pass to Frantzdy Pierrot trailing down the far side and tapped it in past Keylor Navas in the 44th minute.
Placide makes all the stops
Throughout the entire second half, Costa Rica was fighting to equalize the match, but they were no match for Haitian goalkeeper Johny Placide. He made several strong saves to help his team remain in the lead. When the final whistle blew by the referee, Haiti celebrated, and they have a chance to return to the FIFA World Cup.
Haitians are celebrating in the stands
When you saw the Haitians in the corner of the stadium waving their flags, jumping up and down, and celebrating together. Later on, the players came over toward the fans to show their appreciation. Dancing and jumping around at the barrier. It was enjoyable to see.
Costa Rica is in danger
After three draws in their first three matches, a big win at home over Nicaragua, this loss is a big blow to the Ticos. Miguel Herrera will now go into their final match at home against Honduras, who also lost to Nicaragua by a final score of two goals to nil, and the points are very tight.
Group C standings
While Groups A & B are clear, Group C has been turned upside down. The current situation before this coming Tuesday’s final match day is set up like this. HONDURAS 8 Pts, +4 GD, HAITI 8 Pts, +1 GD, COSTA RICA 6 Pts, +2 GD, NICARAGUA 4 Pts, -6 GD.
