First time since West Germany in 1974, the French-based island returns to the big party
Willemstad, Curacao- This was the moment that all Haitians were waiting for, taking destiny into their own hands to make a return to the FIFA World Cup, facing Nicaragua at the Ergilio Hato Stadium in Curacao. This was the match they needed to give their fellow countrymen a moment of excitement after all the troubles their island has been through. It did happen after the full 90 minutes passed as Haiti defeated Nicaragua by a final score of two goals to nil.
Deedson does it all
Inside the first ten minutes of the match, Haiti controlled the ball and were determined to get on the scoresheet first. Louicius Deedson received the ball at the far side touchline, ran across the top of the area. When he got towards the near side, he ripped a big ball inside the far post and got the party started in the 9th minute.

Big goal in stoppage time
Haiti finished the first 45 minutes of the match and entered stoppage time to get another. Inside the very first minute, the ball was looped toward the far side and controlled. A quick pass to Carlens Arcus going down to the end line, made a brilliant cross to Ruben Providence, and headed the ball inside the back post for their second goal of the match.
Hard-working second half
Haiti just kept on attacking Nicaragua’s net. Going down the flanks and making some big runs to add to their scoreline, but they couldn’t get a third. But a moment where Nicaragua almost got their first of the match, Haitian keeper Johny Placide made a huge save in the 82nd minute to keep his clean sheet intact.
Final Whistle and waiting for the official word
When the full-time whistle blew, Haiti defeated Nicaragua. Still, it had to hold off the celebrations as they waited for the news from the other Group C match involving Costa Rica & Honduras. Everyone had their smartphones out to watch the last several minutes for the final result.
When the referee blew the whistle at San Jose, Costa Rica, that other match ended in a scoreless draw. It was official., Haiti won Group C and was headed to the FIFA World Cup for the first time in over 50 years. This was such a wonderful moment to see all of Haiti celebrate at a stadium they called home, but not on Haitian soil.
