New York, NY– Washington Commanders defensive lineman Daron Payne will miss one game without pay following an on-field incident during Sunday’s matchup against the Detroit Lions, the NFL announced Monday.
The suspension stems from a second-quarter altercation in which Payne struck Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, resulting in his immediate ejection from the game. The league determined Payne’s actions violated multiple conduct rules, including throwing a punch and striking an opponent in the head or neck area with his hand or arm.
The incident falls under Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1 of the NFL rulebook, which prohibits “any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship,” as well as Rule 12, Section 2, Article 14(d), which specifically addresses striking or clubbing the head or neck region of an opponent.

Payne, a key contributor to Washington’s defensive front, will be eligible to rejoin the Commanders’ active roster on Monday, Nov. 17, one day after the team faces the Miami Dolphins in Madrid on Nov. 16.
Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Payne retains the right to appeal the suspension. Should he choose to do so, the appeal will be reviewed by one of three jointly appointed hearing officers—former NFL players Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster, or Jordy Nelson—who are compensated by both the NFL and NFLPA to adjudicate on-field player discipline matters.
