NEW YORK, NY – Detroit Lions defensive back Brian Branch is suspended one game without pay for unsportsmanlike conduct during Sunday’s game against Kansas City. The NFL announced the decision on Monday, October 13, 2025.
NFL Vice President of Football Operations Jon Runyan issued the suspension for violating Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1—the league’s catch-all for conduct “contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.”
Runyan Doesn’t Hold Back
Runyan’s letter to Branch was blunt:
“Your aggressive, non-football act was entirely unwarranted, posed a serious risk of injury, and clearly violated the standards of conduct and sportsmanship expected of NFL players. Your conduct reflected poorly on the NFL and has no place in our game.”
The league didn’t specify what Branch did, but Runyan’s language makes it clear—this wasn’t a routine penalty. Whatever happened crossed the line from competitive physicality into reckless territory.

What It Means for Detroit
Branch sits Week 7 against Tampa Bay on October 20. That’s a problem for Detroit. He’s been a key piece of the secondary all season, and now the Lions have less than a week to prepare backups for an expanded role against a Bucs offense capable of explosive plays.
Detroit’s depth will be tested. The coaching staff doesn’t have time to ease anyone into the rotation—whoever steps in needs to be ready immediately.

Appeal Process
Branch can appeal under the CBA. If he does, one of three former players will hear the case: Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster, or Jordy Nelson. They’re jointly appointed by the NFL and NFLPA to handle on-field discipline appeals.
Appeals usually move fast, but given the one-game suspension and Runyan’s harsh letter, Branch faces long odds if he fights it. The league clearly believes this warranted discipline.
The NFL’s Hard Line
This suspension fits the league’s broader crackdown on dangerous conduct. Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1 gives the NFL wide latitude to punish actions that violate sportsmanship, even if they don’t fit neatly into other penalty categories. Late hits, post-whistle altercations, and unnecessary aggression all fall under this umbrella.
The message is simple: cross the line, pay the price. Branch’s status or team affiliation doesn’t matter.
What’s Next
Branch returns to the active roster on October 21, the day after the Tampa Bay game. He’ll forfeit one game check and spend the week reflecting on what got him here.
The Lions face the Buccaneers without a key defensive back in a critical NFC North stretch. Detroit’s defense needs to compensate collectively, or this suspension could cost them more than just Branch’s salary.
Whether he appeals or accepts the ban, Branch will be on the sideline on October 20. When he returns, the Lions’ coaching staff and league officials will be watching closely.
