Rangers Earn a Comeback Win at Montreal

A big third period gives the Rangers a huge win

Montreal, QC- The New York Rangers headed to Montreal, Quebec, to face a red-hot Canadiens side that has a lot of speed, quick passing, and firepower. While they started slow, they found a way to crawl back in, then pounced at the beginning of the final period to take the victory by a final score of four to three.

The Canadiens quickly go ahead

As the puck rimmed around the boards in the Montreal zone, Matthew Robertson misplayed the puck and gave the Canadiens a quick two-on-one. Cole Caufield at the far side enters the Rangers zone, a quick pass to Juraj Slafkovský, then a quick shot that goes in at 1:33 of the first period.

Canadiens up two on the power play

Brendan Gallagher, at the top of the Rangers’ zone, made a hard pass toward Ivan Demidov. With quick thinking, Demidov makes a hard pass to Nick Suzuki, then a one-time shot beats Jonathan Quick to put the lead at two at 3:42 of the first period.

Rangers get back through the power play

Artemi Panarin skated down the near side, then passed the puck back to the near point toward Adam Fox. Fox saw Mika Zibanejad wide open toward the far side, gave him the puck, and Zibanejad, with a one-timer, smacked it in on the power play at 11:56 of the first period.

Rangers tie the game up

As the third period began and the power play was winding down, the Rangers entered the Canadiens’ zone. Panarin, at the far point, skates to the near and finds Fox back at the top of the zone, takes a quick shot at the net, and then the puck is deflected in by J.T. Miller. at 34 seconds of the third period.

The Rookie takes the lead

Conor Sheary at the far boards had the puck pinned. He moved it toward Panarin, who turned around and saw Matthew Robertson trailing into position inside the Canadiens’ blue line. As the puck was passed toward Robertson, he took a huge slapshot that beat Montembeault at 4:11 of the third period.

Panarin finishes his banner night

After setting up the first three Rangers goals, it was Panarin’s turn to earn a tally. Mika Zibanejad took the puck from his own zone and started skating down to the other end of the rink.. With Panarin skating down the near side, he received the pass, then snapped the shot across his body, hitting the far corner and in at 5:51 of the third period.

Canadiens threaten, but can’t tie the game.

Noah Dobson got the Canadiens back to being behind by one goal at 8:26 of the third period, but after that, it was the goaltending of Jonathan Quick, along with the defense of the Rangers, that shut down the Canadiens and held on to the comeback victory after their overtime loss in Toronto.

Jonathan Quick made 21 saves out of 24 shots on goal to get the victory, and the Rangers skated off the Bell Centre ice and headed for the locker room to feel good about this performance and get ready to head back to Madison Square Garden to face the Minnesota Wild.

“I thought it was a real gutsy effort by the guys. I think when you go through some of the early adversity that we’ve gone through here, I said to them after the game that game could have gone so fast. We go down too early like that, given the circumstances that we’ve gone through the last week or so.

I just give the players a lot of credit. I think you learn about your group when you go through experiences like this. And what we learned is that we’ve got a high-character group in there, that there’s a certain resilience to them that I think is admirable and necessary to win in this league. So I couldn’t be more proud of them,” said Mike Sullivan.

ARTEMI PANARIN:  Recorded three points (1A-2GA) in the win, including his first goal of the season. It marks Panarin’s 22nd three-point game since the beginning of the 2023-24 season, the fifth most in the NHL. It also marked Panarin’s 62nd three-point game as a Ranger, which is tied with Brian Leetch for the fourth most in team history. Panarin improved his point streak against Montreal to 13 games (since Feb. 27, 2020) and is the fourth Rangers skater with such a run against one opponent, and first since Brian Leetch (13 GP vs. PIT from 1990-91 – 1992-93). He has recorded a point in 10-straight road games against them since the 2017-18 season. He is one of eight players in NHL history with a road point streak of that length and the first to do so since Steven Stamkos (11 GP from 2017-18 – 2023-24).

MIKA ZIBANEJAD: Scored his 109th career power-play goal as a Blueshirt, surpassing Rod Gilbert for the third most in franchise history. Zibanejad also recorded his 340th assist as a Ranger, tying him for the 10th most in franchise history with Steve Vickers.

ADAM FOX: Collected his second multi-point game of the season and 19th since the beginning of last season, the sixth most among all NHL blueliners.

VLADISLAV GAVRIKOV: tallied his first point with the Rangers with an assist.

MATTHEW ROBERTSON: Scored his first career NHL goal.

CONOR SHEARY: Skated in his 600th career NHL game.
