NASHVILLE, TN – Under cloudy skies and 60-degree temperatures at Nissan Stadium, the New England Patriots delivered a statement victory Sunday afternoon, dismantling the Tennessee Titans 31-13 in front of 67,410 fans to claim their fourth consecutive victory and complete a perfect three-game road trip.
Quarterback Drake Maye orchestrated a surgical offensive performance, completing 21-of-23 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns while adding 62 yards on the ground. His 91.3% completion percentage shattered the Patriots franchise record and ranks tied for eighth-best in NFL history—a remarkable achievement for a 23-year-old quarterback playing in just his second professional season.
“He’s playing at a high level,” said wide receiver Stefon Diggs. “He’s being a quarterback. It’s easy to say that, but he’s finding an open man. Guys are making plays for him. Tight ends are playing well, running backs catching the ball. Receivers, everybody’s just doing their job. When you see a guy in practice, put a lot of time in it, approach this thing the right way, there’s no surprise to us.”
Maye Joins Elite Company
The young quarterback’s 135.9 passer rating marked his sixth consecutive game with a rating above 100, joining Patrick Mahomes and Hall of Famer Dan Marino as the only players under 24 to accomplish such a feat. Maye completed 16 consecutive passes during one stretch, the second-longest streak in franchise history behind the 19-straight completions by both Tom Brady (2015) and Mac Jones (2021).
“I think there is an athleticism to him that’s really, really cool,” said Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel. “I think he’s really accurate from all different spots, whether it’s in the pocket, off platform. He really has done a nice job so far spreading the football around. But there is an accuracy to him that has been really good for us.”
When asked about his record-breaking performance, Maye remained characteristically humble. “Left some out there that I ended up running that I could have thrown. I think I tucked it a couple times when I shouldn’t have, and I think maybe I could get the backside progression more. But yeah, I think I’m trying to be careful with the football and trying to challenge down the field and not just be doing check-down Charlie. Just trying to throw it to the guys that’s open and they’re making great plays.”
Emotional Return to Nashville
The victory held special significance as Vrabel returned to the city where he coached for six seasons, leading the Titans to three playoff appearances. Late in the game, Patriots fans in attendance began chanting “Vrabel! Vrabel! Vrabel!”—a moment that resonated throughout the stadium.
“I didn’t get that many tickets. I don’t know,” Vrabel said with a smile when asked about the chants. “That’s neither here nor there. I’m happy for our players. I think these guys were figuring out how to win, they were figuring out how to practice. I guess it’s humbling to have these people, whoever that is, cheer for us, whether that’s the Patriots, or Drake Maye, or me or anybody else.”
Despite Vrabel’s attempts to downplay the emotional significance throughout the week, his players understood what the game meant.
“Man, it’s crazy,” said linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson. “The whole week obviously we tried emphasizing this being a regular game, regular week. But man, when you gain such a bond with your peers and obviously with your coach, man, they try not to make it more than what it is, just keep a level head, but you know it’s personal for them. And we just want to play hard for him and give him everything we got to make sure they come out on top and get that exact feeling that they would like to feel at the end of the game.”
Diggs was even more direct: “I don’t care what he says, we wanted to win that game for him.”
Touchdown Connections Highlight Offensive Balance
Maye’s two touchdown passes showcased the Patriots’ offensive versatility. The first came on a perfectly executed 3-yard strike to tight end Austin Hooper, capping an 11-play, 93-yard drive—the longest of the season for New England.
“Basically got a high-low out there, and they both went to (Stefon) Diggs,” Maye explained. “They were late getting back to Hoop (Austin Hooper) and Hoop had a nice play. I underthrew it a little bit, but he’s made a lot of those catches in his career and made a big time catch.”
The second touchdown was a 39-yard laser to wide receiver Kayshon Boutte just before halftime, giving the Patriots a 17-13 lead they would never relinquish. The quick-strike drive took just 59 seconds and three plays, demonstrating New England’s explosive capability.
“Kind of the same thing as last week in New Orleans in the two-minute,” Maye said. “Just try to go get points and if something’s there, take a shot deep and just glad we came out with seven and were able to double-dip coming out of halftime.”
Boutte’s touchdown reception was his fourth of the season, a career high that surpassed his three-touchdown total from 2024.
Defense Dominates, Makes History
While Maye’s offense grabbed headlines, the Patriots defense delivered a suffocating performance that has become their calling card in 2025. New England held Tennessee to just 39 yards rushing on 12 attempts—a paltry 3.3-yard average—marking the lowest rushing total allowed since limiting the Los Angeles Chargers to 29 yards in December 2023.
The Patriots remain the only NFL team in 2025 that hasn’t surrendered a 50-yard rushing performance to an individual running back through seven games—the first time in franchise history such dominance has occurred.
Chaisson’s Defensive Masterpiece
The defensive highlight came in the third quarter when Chaisson delivered a game-changing sequence. On Tennessee’s first possession of the second half, Chaisson strip-sacked Titans quarterback Cam Ward at the Tennessee 23-yard line, recovered the fumble at the 4-yard line, and returned it for a touchdown—the Patriots’ first defensive score of the season.
“That was huge,” Chaisson said. “I think that first thing we was talking about at halftime is stop waiting on somebody to make a play and be the one to make the play. Vrabes (Mike Vrabel) kept emphasizing that for sure. It’s something we went over all week and just came to the matching the hand and being able to recover the ball and get in the box.”
The veteran linebacker recorded two sacks in the game—both career firsts—with his second coming later in the third quarter on a crucial third-and-5 at the Tennessee 41-yard line, forcing a punt and maintaining New England’s commanding 31-13 lead.
“How good did it feel after the offense held there for seven-and-a-half (minutes) for you guys to come right back and put another seven on them?” Chaisson reflected. “It’s something that we needed obviously. We were feeling like the energy on the defense wasn’t up to par like we would like it to be, so it was a jump start to get it going and man, I felt like we just started rolling after that for sure.”
Run the Damn Ball
Running back Rhamondre Stevenson continued his assault on Patriots record books, rushing 18 times for 88 yards and a 4-yard touchdown in the third quarter. The performance pushed Stevenson past John Stephens (3,249 yards) into seventh place on the Patriots’ all-time rushing list with 3,311 career yards.
The Patriots’ ground game produced 175 total rushing yards on 36 carries for a 4.9-yard average—the highest total since gaining 200 yards against Indianapolis on December 1, 2024.
“It felt good. I feel like (Coach Mike) Vrabel challenged us, the O-line this week, even the receivers,” Stevenson said. “So, it felt good. It felt great. Got to go watch the film, but it felt efficient on the ground.”
The offensive line’s dominance didn’t go unnoticed by Maye, who praised the unit’s performance: “Those five guys up front are balling man, those guys are warriors. They’re the heartbeat of this team and they come show up every week.”
Douglas’ Spider-Man Catch
Wide receiver DeMario Douglas provided one of the game’s highlight-reel moments with a spectacular one-handed catch on fourth down that kept a crucial drive alive.
“I don’t know. Blessings right there,” Douglas said. “I just had an under route, and I seen the ball and my eyes were just locked on the ball and its fourth-down and that’s a big play. So I know man I can’t let the ball go regardless. So my eyes was like really locked on that ball. My body was going left and I saw the ball behind me and some Spider Manish type catch.”
Receiver Room Chemistry
The Patriots’ receiving corps has developed remarkable chemistry, with multiple players making crucial contributions each week.
“The selfishness, we took it out,” Douglas explained. “We grew a bond that our energy takes over everything. Once one guy make a play, man, the next one go make a play. We build off each other. And man, that’s why I love this room. It starts with our coach. Our coach makes us closer. He give us a speech almost every day before practicing. Man, it hits home.”
Diggs echoed that sentiment: “The closer you get that team camaraderie, football kind of breeds that family environment. You spend a lot of time with a guy, you get to know him personally. You want to go out there and play hard, and you want them to do well.”
Vrabel’s Leadership Philosophy
Multiple players praised Vrabel’s approach to coaching and his ability to connect with the team on a personal level.
“Man, great dude just overall,” Chaisson said. “Obviously, him getting the chance to be able to play in the league and see things from our point of view, but just the relatability that he has for each player. To be able to figure out, not even more so everything just being kind of right and wrong things, but just trying to figure out, ‘Hey what do you see? How do you see it? Why do you see it that way?’ And then, we just talk it through and find the next step forward. So super grateful to have Vrabes as a coach man.”
Perfect Road Warriors
The victory improved New England to 4-0 on the road, marking just the eighth time in franchise history the Patriots have started with such a perfect road record. The Patriots previously went undefeated on the road for entire seasons in 2007 (8-0) and 2016 (8-0).
“Road warriors,” Diggs said when asked what the team learned during the three-game stretch. “Competitive, competitive stamina, going into hostile environments and excelling and playing exceptional football. I think the biggest thing is not turning the ball over. Drake is doing a great job at that and then the defense getting TOs.”
Titans’ Struggles Continue
For Tennessee, the loss extended their difficult season under interim head coach Mike McCoy.
“Got out to a fast start, exactly what we wanted to do as a football team,” McCoy said. “It’s disappointing the way the game went after the end of the first half. So, we got to do a better job stopping the run. The quarterback got out of the pocket a little too often for us.”
Ward took responsibility for the turnover: “Fumbling the football, I think that was what really set us back. If I don’t do that, the game doesn’t get out of hand that fast. So just got to continue to have ball security and get better. Got to hold on to it tighter.”
Looking Ahead
The Patriots return home to face the Cleveland Browns next Sunday, while Tennessee travels to Indianapolis to face the Colts.
“I know the energy is going to be out the roof,” Douglas said about returning home. “Our fans, we have some good fans. We have some great fans, and I can’t wait. I can’t wait. It’s nothing better than at home. I need another home win. That’ll feel good.”
When asked about the team’s potential, Diggs remained focused on the present: “Trying to get six. Easy to say, we want everything and all these things. Right now, we just want six.”
