Another strong performance, but they fall in the extra period
Toronto, ON- The New York Rangers headed to Eastern Canada to play an Original Six matchup, as they faced the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was another battle of goaltenders and strong defense from both teams, but one mistake costs you the extra point in overtime. The Maple Leafs won the game by a final score of two to one.
Toronto scores on the power play
The Maple Leafs were on the power play as Oliver Ekman-Larsson kept the puck in the zone, passed down low to the far side to find William Nylander. Nylander took the shot, as Igor Shesterkin made the save, but the puck went off his right pad and off the leg of Matthew Knies, who was standing just outside the crease at 11:48 of the first period.
The Rangers tied the game
Just inside the Maple Leafs’ zone, the Rangers were looking for the tying goal, and finally got it. As Stolarz made a few saves, the puck was cleared, but kept in by Braden Schneider. He sent the puck back toward the net, and Jusso Parssinen stuck his blade toward the pads of Stolarz to tie the game at 4:51 of the third period.
A bad bounce led to the winner
The Rangers had the puck inside the Maple Leafs zone, as they made a change, Mika Zibanejad came on and skated for a one-time shot opportunity, the puck bounced and missed his stick. That gave the Leafs the chance for a two-on-one.
Morgan Rielly sent Nylander down the near side with Adam Fox skating back to help Shesterkin. Once Fox went down and slid away, a quick pass to Auston Matthews toward the far post and an easy tap-in to win the game at 58 seconds in Overtime.
Goaltending and defense
Anthony Stolarz of the Leafs and Igor Shesterkin played very well in net for their teams. Strong in the net, catching gloves active, as both goalies were brilliant in the net. It feels like these games are already in the final stretch, even though the season has started.
Stolarz made 28 saves out of 29 shots on goal for the win, while Shesterkin made 22 saves out of 24 shots on goal. The defensive play was also strong for the Rangers, keeping the puck out of the net and keeping the Leafs toward the outside of the slot.
“I feel like the guys are competing hard. We’re defending hard as a team. You know, when you look at this Toronto team, with some of the personnel that they have, it’s similar to Edmonton in the sense that they’re two of the more dangerous teams. Offensively, anyway, they’re high-octane offensive teams, and I think we’re defending extremely hard against them.
You know, I thought we had a bunch of looks again, and you know what the key for me right now is? We just, we’ve got to make sure we don’t get discouraged. I just think we’ve… it was a big point for us. It’s an important point for us.
You know, we’ve got to make sure that we control our own mindsets here moving forward. You know, I think their intentions are in the right place. We’re trying to get traffic at the net. You know, we’re willing to get inside. We had some real good looks inside. I thought the power play had once again had a bunch of good looks. You know, I do believe that these guys are gonna score. You know, it’s a similar feel the last couple of games,” said Mike Sullivan.
JUSSO PARSSINEN: Scored his first goal of the season, tying the score at 1-1 in the third period.
