Suriname Saves a point on Late Goal against Guatemala in World Cup Qualifying

A late equalizer in second half stoppage time keeps them at the top of Group A

Paramaribo, Suriname- A big match was coming back to the Franklin Essed Stadium as Suriname was looking to continue their magical run to their first FIFA World Cup appearance. Their next opponent was Guatemala, as they wanted to fix their last two matches from September. After the full 90 minutes, the match ended in a one goal draw.

Suriname’s strong first half

From the start of the match till halftime, Suriname attacked the net every opportunity they had. Guatemalan goalkeeper Nicolas Hagen was up to the task to prevent the Surinamians from getting on the scoresheet.

Subs in one minute, scores in the next

The goals came in the second half as Darwin Lom came in the 74th minute as a substitute, and then he struck very quickly. Guatemala had the ball at the near side touchline, then it was crossed into the area. Suriname defender Shaquille Pinas played it off his chest, but Lom snuck in and delivered a beautiful strike with a midair scissors kick to take the lead in the 75th minute.

Late goal saves a point

The fourth official posted five minutes of second half stoppage time. Surianme earned a corner at the near side. As the ball was delivered, it was punched out by Hagen inside the area toward the outside. Jean Paul Boetius retrieved the ball, made a quick pass to Virgil Misidjan, then took it one time through everyone and splashed the inside of the far post, sending all Surinamians into a frenzy in the fourth minute of five.

Staying at the top

With that big goal, Suriname remains in the top spot of Group A with five points and a goal differential of +1, and has scored one goal more than Panama, who finally won a game away at the Estadio Cuscatlan against El Salvador by a goal to nil.

Suriname’s next match is on the road to Panama, as that will be a bigger task to play at the Estadio Rommel Fernández, while Guatemala will go on the road at the Estadio Cuscatlan on Tuesday, October 14th.
