Curacao’s Brilliant Performance over Jamaica puts them Top of the Group in World Cup Qualifying

A strong performance leap frogs the Dutch Island over the Reggae Boys in Group B

Willemstad, Curacao-The first match of the October Window in Group B saw first place Jamaica travel to face the Blue Stars at Ergilio Hato Stadium. What many were hoping to see was a big game against an old power of the Caribbean take on a surging one with two well-known managers who have been around the block in club and international football. It ended with a complete victory by the home side as Curacao won by a final score of two goals to nil.

Jearl Margaritha received the ball along the near side touchline, saw Juninho Bacuna all alone, and gave him the ball. He turned around to pass it to Livano Comenencia, who struck the ball from 27 yards away and somehow caught Philadelphia Union Goalkeeper Andre Blake napping and splashing it inside the far post in the 14th minute.

Curacao was attacking Jamaica again when the ball was coming down along the far side touchline. A long cross was delivered toward the area, took a deflection across to the near side, where Kenji Gorre received the ball. Made a move to get into a better position and lashed a beautiful bending ball to beat Blake at the upper far 90 in the 68th minute

Elroy Room is a brick wall

There’s nothing else to say about Curacao’s goalkeeper, Elroy Room. The former Columbus Crew goalkeeper once again showed why he is still the number one keeper for his national team. He continued to make strong saves to keep Jamaica off the scoresheet and showed some flair as well.

Battle of the Masters

The Caribbean Zone hasn’t had football managers with the type of pedigree these two men have in Europe. Former England National Team Manager, Steve McLaren, for Jamaica, and former Dutch National Team Manager, Dick Advocaat, for Curacao. Plenty of knowledge from both men, and they have done a fantastic job preparing their teams for this final stretch of World Cup Qualifying.

Group B has flipped

Jamaica has now suffered its first loss in the group as they have been relegated to the second position, while Curacao has promoted itself to the first position of Group B. One more match on Tuesday, then two more in November to see who will punch their tickets to the World Cup or who will advance to the playoffs.
