Rangers fall in the third period again to end home preseason schedule
New York, NY- The Rangers finished off their third home preseason game as they took on the New Jersey Devils. Not many whistles were blown in this one as both teams skated hard up and down the ice. But after all three periods were played, the Devils came away with a three-to-one victory before the final preseason game is played this weekend.
Rempe’s poor decision
Matt Rempe was pinned at the far boards near the blue line of the Devils’ zone, tried to make a play, but moved the puck to an open part of the ice that led to the Devils creating a two-on-one. Arseni Gritsyuk collected the puck, skated down the ice, and made the pass to Paul Cotter, who scored at 16:58 of the first period.
Edstrom got help from the opposition
The puck was sent down the rink into the Devils’ zone, as Simon Nemec skated down to retrieve it. Following him was Adam Edstrom. As Nemec skated between Edstrom and his net, he tried to backhand the puck hard out of the zone, but struck Edstrom’s right leg and beat Jacob Markstrom at 13:30 of the second period.
The Devils retake the lead on the power play
The Devils had the puck in the Rangers’ zone on the power play, passing it around at the points. Nemec found Douggie Hamilton at the far side, then passed the puck toward the net, where Ondrej Palat redirected the puck slightly off the heel of his stick and past Jonathan Quick at 2:44 of the third period.
Third period still a problem
The Devils got the empty net goal to finish it off by Dawson Mercer at 18:37 of the third period. While you hope the Rangers won’t have any issues in the third period during the regular season, this has been an issue in the last four preseason games. Hopefully, when all the cuts are made and the players from camp have moved on toward the AHL or ECHL, this Rangers team will be fine.
