Not many knew what would happen in this World Cup Round of 32 match, but they knew that Switzerland and Algeria were hungry to advance into the Round of 16. As these sides did face each other, it was the Swiss who decided to jump out into a lead within the first few minutes in each half to get ahead and clamp down on the lead. While Algeria tried to make it a game, the Swiss were too strong and too dominant as they took the victory with the final score at two goals to nil.
Against the run of play, the Swiss scored first
Algeria started very well when the referee blew the opening whistle. They were threatening the Swiss with their early runs. But against the run of play, Switzerland took control and started making their first attacking run down the far side. Ruben Vargas had the ball and waited for help at the midfield stripe. Johan Manzambi flew past, and Vargas passed him the ball to continue the attack. As Manzambi headed toward the net, he tried to make the pass, but it was slightly deflected and still reached Breel Embolo, who sidefooted it into the net in the 10th minute.
Another early goal in the second half
Switzerland was looking for a second goal, and they wanted to get on the board very quickly. They started to attack the Algerian net going down the far side touchline. As the Swiss got closer, a ball was delivered into the area on a pinpoint cross, but it was blocked. Another shot came, and another block from Algeria’s defense helped their keeper but left a huge rebound, and on the third attempt, Dan Ndoye smashed it home and got the two goal lead in the 46th minute. Switzerland wouldn’t be denied to extend their lead and they cruised all the way to the end of the match.
Switzerland kept attacking but couldn’t get a third
Throughout the second half, Switzerland continued to attack and show no mercy to Algeria, but they were very unlucky not to get a third goal and truly put the game away. They had one or two moments they should’ve scored, but Algeria’s defenders and their goalkeeper kept the ball out. Algeria did have some chances, but they couldn’t muster anything to penetrate the Swiss defense, and when the final whistle blew, Algeria was going home while the Swiss were advancing to the Round of 16.
