This was a huge match between two strong national teams who are no strangers against each other as they battled all 90 minutes including the amount of stoppage time added in the second half. Two superstars who are about to call it a career and showed the world the biggest chess match on a football pitch. Without a doubt one of the greatest matches in the Round of 32 and at the end after the referee blew his final whistle Portugal moves on as they win the match by a final score of two goals to one.
Opening goal came from a cross and a blast
Croatia was moving the ball around to try and unlock Portugal’s defense to get a chance for a shot on goal. As Croatia had the ball along the near side passing it around, it went toward Josip Stanisic. As he looked up Stanisic crossed the ball toward the far side and found Ivan Perisic. He chested the ball down, settled it and ripped a hard shot in the net and the celebrations started for the Eastern European side as that goal was scored in the 53rd minute.
Penalty awarded to Portugal and Converted
Portugal earned a corner and it was delivered toward the area, the ball was in perfect position for a shot attempt but everyone missed it. Then VAR came calling and informed referee Espen Eskås to head to the monitor. On the replays Nikola Vlasic defending the corner inside the area saw him take both his hands and arms to hug and brought down Renato Veiga. The referee announced to award a penalty in favor of Portugal. Taking the spot kick was Cristiano Ronaldo, and he converted it which became his first World Cup knockout stage goal to level the match at one in the 68th minute.
Portugal scores at the death
This match was going down to the wire and with 10 minutes of second half stoppage time added, Portugal knew they had to make their big chance count. Attacking down the near side the ball was given to Rafael Leao, as he walked slowly up the pitch he decided to send a long cross to the middle of the area for the hope of a teammate to get inside and score the goal. His prayers were answered when Goncalo Ramos running into that space with two defenders on him leapt for the ball and headed it inside the net at the fourth minute of ten in second half stoppage time.
Croatia scores but was taken down by VAR
Within the final moments of the 10 minutes of second half stoppage time, Croatia was looking for a big equalizer to tie the match and send it into extra time. As the ball was sent towards the scrum inside the Portugal area. The ball took a deflection and landed right at the feet of a Croatian attacker and scored the potential tying goal. But VAR was on the case and brought the referee back to the monitor. On the broadcast the ball has a chip inside to help inform the VAR room if there was an offside. And there was as the first Croatian attacker was a full step ahead while his teammate was trying to head the ball forward. That wiped out the equalizer and then the match ended after another minute or two afterwards.
Ronaldo moves on, Modric rides off into the sunset
Two historical players announced this World Cup would be their last for their respective National Teams. Cristiano Ronaldo for Portugal and Luka Modric for Croatia. Both men have given their nations and all fans of the game so much joy and wonderful memories putting on their shirts for their national teams. While Ronaldo will move on to the Round of 16 and face Spain in the Dallas area on Monday, July 6th. while Modric will now head off into the sunset to call his International career over. These two men should have statues built in their own countries to remember what they have done.
