England and Ghana Battle to a Scoreless Draw

A big matchup in Group L, as England and Ghana each earned a win in their first group stage games, has come together to battle for three points and make an attempt to take the top spot. They threw everything at each other, including the kitchen sink. Both teams had marvelous opportunities to open the scoring, but once again, the goalkeepers have been amazing throughout the entire 90 minutes. Both sides decided to share the points and ended this contest with a scoreless draw, and are tied with four points each.

England pressed in the first half, but got nothing to show for it.

The opening half for England was a good one. While there were no goals, the Three Lions played strongly with several attacking runs and fought to put pressure on the backline of Ghana. Unfortunately, nothing timely went in as their opponents played well defensively, and several free kicks and chances were wide or over the crossbar. Not a lot of shots challenged Ghana’s keeper Benjamin Asare. Once the whistle blew for halftime, the hope was to make some adjustments and be ready for the second half.

Ghana is attacking and defending well

When the second half began, Ghana started to turn up the pressure. They were making several attacking runs and forcing England’s goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford, to come off his line and make some stops, or forcing shots wide, but on the defensive end, they have helped Asare by blocking shots and redirecting the balls to keep their net empty and clean, so they can survive for that point at the end of the match.

Big collision that doesn’t become a penalty

Ghana had a great opportunity when they had the ball and sprung their man into an attacking run. Prince Adu was chasing after the ball, making a huge run to enter the area, but just outside of it was Pickford coming out to clear the ball away. Both Adu & Pickford collided into each other, and it looked like at first Pickford fouled Adu, but referee Said Martinerz blew his whistle and pointed in the direction of England. While it looked like Pickford made the contact and should’ve been a free kick for Ghana, both men missed the ball on that challenge.

England had a fair amount of possession in the second half. It was getting late in the second half, and there was a big push to get that goal. England moved the ball around along the outside of the area and deep in the midfield, when they finally turned it back toward the area. A long cross from the far side was coming in toward Nico O’Reilly as he was just in front of the near post. He leapt up and headed the ball toward the goal, and the ball hit the crossbar. The rebound came out toward Harry Kane, as he hammered it high and over the crossbar, just missing that big chance in the 86th minute.

Final whistle blows, and both sides take a point

Once the final whistle blew, both sides just took a very big, deep breath and started moving towards handshakes, and they knew they had given it their all. It was a wonderful match, although not a single goal was scored, both sides were giving it their all, trying to gain the advantage. But instead, they share the points and are currently in the top two spots of Group L. They hope to see a favorable result in the other match between Panama and Croatia, until the simultaneous games come into play.
