Everton’s Premier League Summer Series campaign got off to a nightmare start as they were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by AFC Bournemouth at MetLife Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Toffees’ experimental lineup and threadbare squad depth were brutally exposed in the sweltering New Jersey heat.
Match Summary
David Moyes’ side started brightly but capitulated after halftime, with Philip Billing, Dango Ouattara, and Daniel Adu-Adjei condemning the Blues to a heavy defeat that continued their woeful record against the Cherries.
First Half: Promise Turns to Frustration
Moyes deployed an experimental 3-4-2-1 formation with Vitaliy Mykolenko, Jake O’Brien, and Nathan Patterson forming the back three. Dwight McNeil and James Garner operated as wing-backs. At the same time, Idrissa Gueye and Tim Iroegbunam anchored the midfield behind the attacking duo of Iliman Ndiaye and Charly Alcaraz, with Beto leading the line.
The Blues showed early promise with McNeil making dangerous runs down the left flank. Ndiaye came closest to breaking the deadlock when Iroegbunam’s through ball set him up for a shot that flew narrowly wide.
Bournemouth, under Andoni Iraola’s creative guidance, responded with Hamed Traore forcing Jordan Pickford into action with a deflected effort. Alcaraz then tested new Cherries goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic with a full-stretch save before the drinks break.
The pattern continued with Garner receiving a booking for a poor challenge on striker Evanilson, while Beto had two good chances – first seeing his shot blocked after Ndiaye’s cross, then being denied by Petrovic, who made himself big to save.
Second Half: Defensive Collapse
The honors were arguably even at halftime, but Everton’s inexperience and squad limitations were ruthlessly exposed after the break. With few options on the bench, Moyes was powerless to stem the tide.
59′ – Philip Billing 1-0: The Danish midfielder, who has made a habit of scoring against Everton, struck from outside the box with a shot that left Pickford with no chance. It was a moment of quality that punished the Blues’ growing defensive uncertainty.
60′ – Dango Ouattara 2-0: Patterson was caught in possession, and while Everton initially escaped punishment, they couldn’t hold out. Ouattara benefited from a fortunate deflection to beat Patterson before firing into the roof of the net via Pickford’s near post. The England goalkeeper will feel he could have done better.
70′ – Daniel Adu-Adjei 3-0: The final nail in the coffin came from a horrendous Jake O’Brien backpass that left Pickford stranded in no-man’s land. Adu-Adjei gratefully accepted the gift to complete the rout.

Transfer News
The defeat comes as Everton appear to have secured Bayern Munich left-back Adam Aznou, though they’ve been rebuffed in their pursuit of Lyon midfielder Malick Fofana. Attacking reinforcements remain the highest priority.
Late substitutes Thierno Barry (making his Everton debut) and Youssef Chermiti couldn’t salvage any pride for the Blues.
What’s Next
This result extends Everton’s poor record against Bournemouth, as they have lost all three encounters last season. The Toffees will need to regroup quickly as they continue their Premier League Summer Series campaign alongside Manchester United and West Ham United.
For Moyes, the performance underscored the urgent need for squad reinforcement ahead of the new Premier League season.
