Mourinho Signs Three-Year Deal After Arbeloa Exit
Madrid, Spain – Real Madrid appointed José Mourinho as head coach on Thursday, bringing the Portuguese manager back to the Bernabéu 13 years after his first spell in charge and ending Álvaro Arbeloa’s brief tenure.
The club confirmed Mourinho has signed a three‑year contract after Madrid agreed to pay Benfica €15 million in compensation to release him from his deal in Portugal. Benfica announced Wednesday that Madrid had activated the clause, clearing the way for Mourinho’s return.
Pérez Fulfills Campaign Promise With High-Profile Return
Madrid president Florentino Pérez made Mourinho’s return a central piece of his reelection platform, which also included plans to strengthen the squad. Pérez pledged moves for Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries and authorized a €150 million bid for a marquee signing.
Earlier this week, Madrid confirmed they had submitted a €150m offer for Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez, which was rejected.
