In the pouring rain at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Canada’s Men’s National Team hosted Uzbekistan in their first match of this international week before they get ready for the World Cup that will start in Toronto on the afternoon of Friday, June 12th. It was a very difficult match against their opponents, as the hard tackling was on display in the opening moments of the first half, before everything finally settled down. But after the full 90 minutes were up, it was Canada that took the victory as they defeated Uzbekistan by the final score of two goals to nil.
Tani Oluwaseyi was the main provider to set up both goals for Canada as they found the back of the net in the second half. The first goal came from the near side and was worked toward the middle of the park. As Oluwaseyi received the ball, he moved up toward the area and saw Jonathan Osorio along the far side. Gave him the ball and was allowed the space to take a few touches and shot it on frame. While the ball did take a slight deflection off the goalkeeper, it went into the back of the net to give the team a one-goal lead in the 58th minute.
The second goal for Canada came in second half stoppage time. As the ball was moving up the near side, Oluwaseyi once again had possession and was looking to make something happen. He found Jayden Nelson in front of him and onside. As he passed it, Nelson headed straight for the area. When he got close to the near post, he quickly turned himself to get a better angle and placed the ball by bending it on the floor toward the inside of the far post and scored in the second minute of three in stoppage time to make sure the win was secured. Canada was successful in this match-up, and Edmonton was celebrating when the final whistle was blown.
In the first half, there was some action, but there were also some hard fouls being delivered from both sides. First, from the Uzbekistanis, when Aziz Ganiev and Farrukh Sayfiev delivered hard tackles in the second and the 10th minute, respectively. Then, later in the first half, Canada had two players booked for hard fouls. Liam Miller took his man down in the 40th minute. Three minutes later, Derek Cornelius was also booked for a hard foul. Maxime Crepeau started the first half and made two to three stellar saves to keep the match scoreless. While there were some issues with the pitch in the first half, with all that rain, Canada still found ways to keep the match deadlocked.
Moise Bombito and Richie Laryea, who were coming back from injury, got 30 minutes to start the match, and were subbed out for Luc deFougerolles and Niko Sigur, who finished the rest of the match till the end. While it was great to see Alphonso Davies on the pitch, he was dressed in his regular clothes and helped the referee flip the coin as the honorary captain to see who would start the match for the kickoff inside the center circle.
“Guys look fit, guys look sharp, our guys are playing fast and quick and ready to react. And so I think overall… We use this, you know, against a, you know, the condition’s not perfect, but the pitch held up. Against a good Uzbekistan team that doesn’t give much away, we could have had more than two goals for sure. We could have had a few more. And I thought overall in the day we were pretty dangerous. And if we could have limited a couple more counters, then we would have had a really secure performance.
The ball movement and the ideas of how to break Uzbekistan down, the tactical positioning of how we tried to create some combinations, and the fact that we were dangerous in the first half, even if we weren’t able to get the goal. I thought that there was good communication on the pitch, and guys were understanding how to try to break them down, but also how to make it difficult on them. So you know, like, they didn’t really, from the run of play, a team that still can play some pretty good football. They didn’t really break us down ever. You know, it was just as if we had cleaned up a few more counter situations, then I think it would have been a really complete performance,” said Jesse Marsch
Canada will now travel back east to face the Republic of Ireland at Stade Saputo in Montreal, Quebec, at 7:30 PM
