Switzerland gains revenge from the last round robin game
Cortina Bay, ITA- The U.S. Women’s curling team headed back to the Curling Arena in Cortina as they faced Switzerland once again for a huge match in the Semi-Finals. Another hard-fought match from both sides, but unlike the last matchup between these two sides, it didn’t go to an extra end, and the USA edged the Swiss to take second place. This time the Swiss were ready to go, and they took advantage during the ends they held the hammer. With a late chance in the last end, the Swiss found a way to break through the guard and got the victory to advance to the Gold Medal Game as they defeated the USA by a final score of six-to-four.
Overview
The USA got a point in the first end, but the Swiss took the lead with a two-point end in the second when Alina Paetz gently sent the hammer into the button with ease, while they had a stoneinsdie the upper right corner of the 12-foot. After another point in the third end for the USA to level it at two, another two points in the fourth end for the Swiss gave them a two-point lead when Tabitha Peterson knocked out a stone on the left side, but it deflected across and out of the house. She threw it a bit too hard. But once again, with a stone inside the upper right four-foot, Paetz glided another stone into the button.
The USA did get a point in the fifth end, but two straight scoreless ends in the 6th and 7th not only kept the hammer for the USA, but also kept Switzerland ahead with a single point. In the eighth end, it looked like the USA had an advantage with two stones inside the bottom of the four-foot, but PAetz once again sent the hammer down and knocked out both to get a point. and a five-to-three lead. The USA earned another point in the ninth to it the game again, but in the tenth end, it was all over. The USA, on their last stone, tried a high guard well outside the house, but Paetz was able to use her hammer to slip through both guards and land inside the button for the one point and to the gold medal game.
While Team USA will be playing for the Bronze medal, this semi-final match was not their day. Just too many plays that didn’t turn out at the end, and while they tried to protect their stones, the Swiss found a way to bypass their guards, or they were given the chance to take their points with ease. But one more game to play for third-place as they will face Canada one more time.
