U.S. Men’s Curling Team Concedes to Great Britain After Horrible Start

Flat start and behind the eight ball all match long

Cortina Bay, ITA- The final Round Robin match for Team USA as they faced Great Britain for the hope of earning a place in the Semi-Finals. As slim a margin as that was, their performance in the match was a complete disaster from the very start. Misplayed stones and put themselves behind the eight ball. After realizing very quickly they had no hope of catching up to their opponents, Team Daniel Casper conceded after five ends and decided to say that’s the end of our Olympic journey. Great Britain took the win as the final score was nine-to-two.

Overview

From the start of this match, nothing worked for the USA. Daniel Casper’s hammer throws were off target and had too much weight underneath it to make any stop insdie tthe house. Great Britain scored points in the first three ends. A single point in the first and second ends, until they got a magical four spot in the third end, when they cleared out all the stones for Team USA. Casper tried the hammer, and sadly, that one went through the entire house as the score was six to nothing.

Even though Team USA finally got a winning end by putting up two points in the fourth end, the big blow came from the fifth end when Team GB blew up the button and knocked out two USA stones. Casper, on the last stone, did curl it inside the button beautifully, but Bruce Mouat used his hammer to take it out of the button for three points, and that’s when Team USA agreed to give up and say good game.

With that loss, it is now impossible for Team USA to make the Semi-Finals unless certain metrics are met, along with big losses for Italy and Norway. Right now, Canada defeated Italy eight-to-three, and Switzerland defeated Norway ten-to-four. On the morning of Thursday, February 19th, Norway will play Canada, and Italy will play Switzerland. If one or both teams lose in their final round robin matches, and if certain tiebreakers go in favor of the USA, then they will join Canada, Switzerland, and one other team into the Semi-Finals. But doing the job yourself has now been thrown out the window.
