Tough redirection shot drops the result for the USA
Cortina Bay, ITA- The U.S. Women’s Curling Team faced a tough Great Britain side that gave them a good fight. It looked like the USA was going to take asecond consecutive win after thrashing Denmark on Tuesday. But what they didn’t expect was a miraculous tough shot that would use a guard to take out a big stone in the button and force Team USA to make a big shot on their hammer that never came, as Great Britain takes the match by a final score of eight to seven.
Overview
The match was tied at two apiece after the first four ends. The USA took a one-point lead as they set up two stones inside the four-foot to force Great Britain to try and curl their hammer past them and into the button. Sadly, the stone died on the four-foot, but a bit behind the USA stones for one point and a three-to-two lead. But Team GB jumped ahead with a two-pointer in the sixth end. Both teams had stones inside the house, but the middle was wide open. GBR used their hammer to send it down the middle, which looked like it had a bit too much speed. It did go into the house, but the hammer slowly stopped at the bottom of the four-foot.
The USA regained the lead with a three-pointer in the seventh end, as Team GB used their eighth stone to take out multiple stones. It did, but two stones were still inside the house. As Tabitha Peterson sent the hammer down the sheet, it looked like it didn’t have enough speed to make it inside the house. Then Taylor Anderson-Heide, Tara Peterson, and Cory Thiesse quickly jumped into action to sweep the ice to make the hammer curl, and gave it enough speed to enter the 12-foot and take the end for a six-to-four lead. The USA would grab another point in the eighth end, but it all came to an end in the last two ends.
Great Britain got two points in the ninth end, and the lead was down to one. In the tenth end, a shocking hit by Great Britain’s Rebecca Morrison on the last stone went down the right side, struck the guard, and deflected toward the button, where it removed the USA stone inside the button and a potential two points and the win. Tabitha Peterson sent the hammer down the sheet but never got to the house as it struck the high guard, and Great Britain shocks the Curling Arena to defeat the USA. The women have one more game in Round Robin action against Switzerland on Thursday, February 19th.
