Big shot near the Blue Line nails the post and in
Milan, ITA- The big Quarterfinal matchup between the USA Hockey Team and the Swedish Hockey Team was a hard-fought, defensive affair that featured great goaltending and huge moments that broke through. Both goaltenders were incredible to watch as they put their teams on their backs to lead them to the semi-finals. After sixty minutes of regulation, along with a little extra inside the overtime period, Team USA took the victory as they defeated Sweden by a final score of two to one.
Fabulous deflection for the opening goal
No goals were scored in the first period, but the USA got the opening goal of the game as the puck was dropped inside the far faceoff circle. After Dylan Larkin won the draw, a pass back to the far point along the boards to Quinn Hughes, and he crossed it to his brother, Jack. After the faceoff was won LArkin skated toward the net to set up. Jack Hughes ripped a hard shot at the net, and Larkin found a way to deflect the puck past Jacob Markstrom and into the back of the net at 11:03 of the second period.
Late goal before the final minute
Sweden was scrambling to tie the game. They pulled the goaltender when they were inside the USA’s zone. With six skaters on, Sweden was looking for a little luck and found it. Gabriel Landeskog took the puck out of the scrum and passed it back to the far point. Lucas Raymond retrieved the puck and skated from the far point, across the rink, and down the near side. Then he made a quick pass across to Mika Zibanejad, camped out inside the far faceoff circle and near the boards. He ripped a one-timer that beat Connor Hellebuyck that rang off the post and in at 18:29 of the third period.
Overtime winner
The magic moment came to fruition when the USA started skating into Sweden’s zone. Quinn Hughes entered the zone along the near boards, passed the puck back to Matt Boldy at the point, and then back to Quinn Hughes. He would skate up the boards to the point, then turn toward the high slot and rip a big shot that nails the near post and in past Markstrom to send the USA into a frenzy and into the Semi-Finals at 3:27 of overtime, and they will face Slovakia. An incredible shot with a huge roar from the American fans who made the trip to watch their hockey team come up with a huge win.
The Semi-Finals will be on Friday, February 20th at 9:10 PM Italian Time – 3:10 PM Eastern USA
