After eight tries, the ninth did the trick in the Olympic Games
Cortina Bay, ITA- The U.S. Women’s Curling Team battled all match long against Canada for the victory and to even their record to two and one. Both sides gave it their all in one of the most strategic matches in these early round robin matches. But when it mattered the most, Canada just missed the moment by inches, and the USA took the victory as the final score was nine to eight.
Overview
After a scoreless first end, Canada took an early two-point lead in the second end, but the USA was able to tie the match at two with a stone in the four-foot in the third end, then jamming the middle of the house. Canada threw a fastball with their hammer, and hit two stones out of the house, but not the third, and a point in the fourth end.
Canada retook the lead in the fifth end with a point, but a huge sixth end for the USA when they had three stones inside the house, and with their hammer, slowly sent that stone down into the house to reach the button and secured four points to take a six-to-three lead. Canada would cut the deficit with a two-pointer in the seventh end, taking out a stone and landing inside the button with one in the four-foot.
Team USA got a point in the eighth end for a two-point lead, until Canada got three points in the ninth end by clearing the USA Stones along with a bad miss, then Canada slowly brought the hammer down inside the button with two other stones to make it eight to seven. But in the tenth end, it was Canada who had their eighth stone made a terrible mistake.
As Rachel Homan sent it down and looking for a double knockout on the right side. The Hammer got the first stone, and then it slid by the second stone without making a dent in the bottom of the eight-foot. That’s when Tabitha Peterson slowly sent the hammer down, and as it entered the house, all it had to do was to enter the eight-foot, and the match was theirs.
