Just a draw put them ahead while down a man
Kingstown, VCT- The U.S. Men’s Under 17 National Team finished their group stage play with a match against the Dominican Republic. Only needing a draw to move ahead into the knockout stage, they faced a difficult side and went down a man for the rest of the way, but after the full 90 minutes were up, they did get out of Group E with a one-all draw.
Both goals came late in the opening half
The USA took the lead in the 41st minute when Will Ostrander from the far side delivered an excellent cross toward the middle of the area, and leaping to head it in was Malik Jakupovic, beating the keeper toward the back post. Then, the Dominican Republic equalized in the 44th minute. Adrian Garcia was surrounded by three to four U.S. Defenders, somehow got away from them, took the shot, and beat James Donaldson.
That was the only goal allowed by the USA in these three group stage games after a eight goal clean sheet against host nation St. Vincent & The Grenedines and a ten-goal destruction against St. Kitts & Nevis. So in total, 19 goals for, and one goal against.
Down to ten men late
The U.S. Under-17s were sent down to ten men when Astin Mbaye got double yellow and then red to sendhim off to the showers. His first yellow came in the 62nd minute, but later on in the 78th minute, his challenge brought out the second yellow card, then the referee went toward his back pocket to show the red card. With 12 minutes remaining plus stoppage time, the USA fought to keep the point and moved on to the knockout stage.
With this victory and winning the group, the U.S. Under-17s have officially booked a place in the 2026 Under-17 World Cup, which will be held in Qatar this coming November, with the dates yet to be announced.
