Rangers played a Strong Defensive Game, but can’t stop the Hurricanes

Defense and Quick were great, but not the offense

New York, NY- The New York Rangers put on their Centennial jerseys to honor the great goaltenders of the club that made so many fabulous memories and magical moments, from Lorne “Gump” Worsley to Igor Shesterkin. But against the Carolina Hurricanes, they couldn’t get anything in the net as they fell once again by a final score of two to nothing.

Bad turnover leads to a goal

The Hurricanes scored the only goal during five-on-five action when Matt Rempe was trying to clear the puck out of the zone, but it never fully crossed the blueline as the Hurricanes kept the puck in the zone. Mark Jankowski retrieved the puck at the far boards at the point, saw Andrei Svechnikov skating in to make the pass, and in the blink of an eye, Svechnikov snapped one past Jonathan Quick for the only goal of the game at 6:26 of the first period.

Goaltender duel between former Rangers Fans

After the goal was scored, it was a goaltending duel. Quick for the Rangers, who grew up a Rangers fan in Milford, Connecticut, as his hero was Mike Richter, and making waves since his first start as a rookie this season, Brandon Bussi from Sound Beach out on Long Island, grew up a Rangers fan as his hero was Henrik Lundqvist, and met him as well.

Both men were flashing their gloves and making pad saves all over their crease to make sure no other goal went into the net. In fact, if Svechnikov didn’t score that goal in the first period, this game would’ve been scoreless from the start to the end of regulation, and maybe the extra five minutes, or the shootout would’ve had a winner. But a soon-to-be Hall of Famer and a rookie goaltender stole the show at The Garden.

Empty net and another loss

It took a turnover at Center Ice after Quick was pulled for the extra attacker, and the Hurricanes were able to score in the empty net as Jordan Staal converted at 19:06 of the third period to end the evening. The Hurricanes are celebrating, and the Rangers are limping into the Olympic Break as the 2026 Winter Games have begun, and the men will get going within a week to Milan and Cortina, Italy, for their respective nations.

“My message to the group tonight was, you know, I will acknowledge that. You know, we’re in a difficult circumstance, and none of us really want to be in this position or to have any enjoyment or fulfillment in it. But the reality is, we are where we are. And, and so. I’m trying to be understanding of that as their coach and do our best as a coaching staff to support these guys and push them through the process. I thought we lacked a certain competitive spirit tonight. That is simply unacceptable on our part, and that was my discussion with them,” said Head Coach Mike Sullivan
