WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point Football has announced the appointment of Blake Catlett as Quality Control Assistant for Special Teams, continuing the program’s commitment to excellence both on and off the field.
Catlett joins the Black Knights after a successful stint at Samford University, where he coached defensive ends and outside linebackers. Under his guidance, Samford’s defense delivered an impressive 57 tackles for loss during the 2025 season. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Catlett also played a key role in recruiting efforts across the southern and midwestern regions of the country.
Prior to Samford, Catlett spent three seasons at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), serving under veteran head coach Rick Stockstill. His tenure at MTSU included roles as Defensive Quality Control Coach and, later, Defensive and Special Teams Quality Control Coach. Catlett’s work contributed to the Blue Raiders’ successful campaigns, including victories at the 2021 Bahamas Bowl and 2022 Hawaii Bowl, as well as a signature upset over No. 25 Miami in 2022. In that matchup, Catlett’s special-teams unit executed a pivotal second-quarter blocked punt, shifting momentum and setting up a short-field touchdown that helped the Blue Raiders seize early control of the game. His tactical planning was evident in MTSU’s maximization of field position and its capitalization on Miami’s mistakes, providing a clear example of his ability to influence outcomes through disciplined, detail-oriented special-teams play. This approach aligns directly with Army West Point’s emphasis on preparation, resilience, and excelling in tightly contested games. He also briefly served as Director of Player Personnel at MTSU during the 2024 offseason.

Catlett’s coaching journey began at Austin Peay State University in the spring of 2021, where he assisted with tight ends and running backs as an Offensive Quality Control Assistant. His coaching and organizational skills were evident as the Governors finished the FCS season with a strong 4-2 record.
A native of Jackson, Tennessee, Catlett earned his degree in Marketing from Middle Tennessee State University in December 2020, where he also played as an offensive lineman for the Blue Raiders. Teammates and colleagues have often described Catlett as a servant leader who takes time to mentor younger players and puts the needs of the team first. At Samford and MTSU, he was known for his open-door policy and his willingness to help student-athletes succeed both academically and athletically, reflecting a commitment to character that resonates strongly with the Army West Point values. His diverse background in both offensive and defensive coaching, as well as his extensive experience in program management and recruiting, make him a valuable addition to the Army West Point Football staff.
