Relentless Huskies Set the Tone Early
HARTFORD, CT — The energy inside PeoplesBank Arena was electric as No. 1 UConn turned defense into art, overwhelming St. John’s 88-43 to notch their 45th consecutive Big East regular-season victory. The Huskies left no doubt about their championship ambitions, igniting the crowd with relentless pressure and unselfish play.
Defensive Masterclass and Lightning Start
From the opening tip, UConn’s defense was suffocating. The Huskies hit their first nine shots and scored eight points before St. John’s even attempted a field goal. KK Arnold, a sparkplug on both ends, set the tone with three steals in the opening minutes. “Just basically how we can speed them up,” Arnold said. “Our defensive pressure, full court, just really sped them up, and that created our steals and our offensive baskets.”
Azzi Fudd poured in 16 points and extended her streak of consecutive made free throws to 34, while Sarah Strong delivered a statement performance with 24 points, five assists, and a season-high six steals. “Our practices this week played a part in that,” Fudd said. “It was definitely very defense-oriented… and we did a great job of carrying that momentum from practices over to the game.”

Strong’s All-Around Brilliance
Strong’s impact was everywhere—her 30th straight double-figure scoring game and a national honor as USA Basketball’s 2025 Female 3×3 Athlete of the Year. “I feel like he [Coach Auriemma] was very happy with our defensive intensity,” Strong said. “Things that we’ve been doing in practice a lot. You’re kind of expected to go out there and play that way.”
Geno’s Blueprint: Teamwork and Growth
Head coach Geno Auriemma was quick to praise his team’s rotations and energy: “Our rotations, I think, today were the best that they’ve been this year. We seemed to be exactly where we needed to be… I thought our energy was incredible.”

Auriemma emphasized the importance of getting touches for his stars: “I like when [Sarah] gets a lot of touches. It doesn’t matter to me whether they’re in the lane, out on the perimeter, on the move… as long as she gets a lot of touches any which way.”
He also pointed to Arnold’s newfound confidence: “She’s much more under control. When she drives the ball into the lane, there’s a point to it… She’s shooting the ball with a lot of confidence. She’s playing with a lot of confidence. And that’s part of maturity.”
Red Storm’s Resilience and the Battle on the Boards
St. John’s (13-4, 3-3) showed grit, briefly cutting the deficit to 13 in the second quarter and winning the rebounding battle 28-19—a rarity against UConn. Beautiful Waheed led the Red Storm with 14 points, and Sa’Mya Wyatt added nine. But the Huskies’ 33 forced turnovers and 23 steals proved insurmountable.
Huskies’ Depth and Drive Remain Unmatched
Blanca Quinonez added 14 points off the bench, while Serah Williams contributed five assists and three blocks. Despite missing sophomore center Jana El Alfy (concussion), UConn’s depth and commitment to defense and transition play were the difference-makers.
Caroline Ducharme, the only Husky to play in both this game and UConn’s last Big East loss to St. John’s in 2023, helped anchor the team’s veteran presence.
Looking Ahead: Rivalry, Respect, and Relentless Coverage
With 45 straight Big East wins, UConn remains the gold standard. But the Red Storm’s heart and hustle are a reminder that every night in the conference is a battle. These matchups are why fans flock to arenas and tune in across the country for UConn Huskies games.
