Red Storm Rolls: St. John’s Blows Past Stony Brook, Extends Non-Conference Streak

Stony Brook, N.Y. – In a game that started with grit and ended in a statement, the St. John’s women’s basketball team unleashed a second-half storm at Island Federal Arena, powering past Stony Brook 73-42 to stretch their non-conference win streak to seven.

A Tale of Two Halves: The Grind and the Surge

The first half was a grind—baskets hard-earned, defense relentless, and every possession fought for. “I think our offensive energy was better [in the second half],” said the St. John’s coach. “I thought we did a good job, actually, of defending in the first half, as ugly as it was. So I just told them, you know, if we defend the same way, I think we can get them fatigued enough to be… I mean, I thought we started the third really well. We turned them over a bunch, got out for some runouts. Offensively, we had a little better flow. But no, I was happy with everything they did in the second half.”

The Red Storm (9-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) forced the Seawolves into 22 turnovers and converted those miscues into a staggering 28 points. Stony Brook’s offense was stifled, held to just three single-digit quarters and 18.8% from deep.

Wyatt’s Consistency, Wagner’s Spark, Waheed’s Hustle

Sa’Mya Wyatt was the engine again, notching her fifth straight double-figure night with 13 points and 8 rebounds. “It was really a true group effort, you know, in terms of everybody contributing,” the coach emphasized, and the box score backed it up: Shaulana Wagner poured in 12 points and 3 assists, Beautiful Waheed added 10 points and 2 steals, and Jailah Donald was a +28 spark plug off the bench.

The Turning Point: Defensive Pressure, Fast-Break Fire

After a 15-9 first quarter, St. John’s opened the second on an 8-0 run, then weathered a Stony Brook push before Donald’s buzzer-beating three sent the Johnnies into halftime up 35-24. But it was the third quarter that broke the game open. “We had a little better flow [offensively]… I was happy with everything they did in the second half,” the coach reflected. Wyatt’s 7-0 solo run and the team’s suffocating defense left the Seawolves searching for answers.

“We’re Focused on Us”

With Hofstra and New Haven up next before the Big East grind resumes, the Red Storm’s mindset is clear: “The same as what we saw today, just, again, continued, you know, concentrated on our effort and ability to work on ourselves more than maybe somebody else. We’ve had four games in nine or ten days… so we really are, like, trying to get to the finish line and then be ready for New Haven and then Villanova. So just hope we can play the way that we did this, you know, tonight.”

Stony Brook’s Perspective: The Fight and the Process

Stony Brook’s coach didn’t mince words about the challenge: “I think the biggest challenge for our team right now is putting it together for 40 minutes. And not being a 20- or 25-minute team… We’re a new group, and we’re asking a lot of them in a lot of different spaces that they’ve never been in. So it’s part of the process. And hopefully we can take the bump, learn from it, grow from it, and hopefully it can propel us when we get to conference play.”

On the technical side, turnovers were the backbreaker: “We had five assists at 22 turnovers. It’s going to be hard to win any game… That’s a really big stat. And you’re not going to be successful—doesn’t matter who you play—if that is your assist and turnover stat.”

But the coach’s pride in her players was unwavering: “They want it. They are saying the right things. They’re doing what we ask them to do in practice. But there’s another level that we have. There’s another step that we have to take… No more just talking about it. We got to do it.”

By the Numbers

  • St. John’s: 50% FG, 92.9% FT, 28 points off turnovers, 42 points in the paint, 10 fast-break points, 32 bench points
  • Wyatt: 13 pts, 8 reb
  • Wagner: 12 pts, 3 ast
  • Waheed: 10 pts, 2 stl
  • Donald: 8 pts, +28 plus/minus

Next Up

St. John’s returns to Queens for its final non-conference home game, hosting Hofstra on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm will look to keep the streak—and the momentum—alive.
