After a strong start, the Hawks took the game over
Chicago, IL – The New York Rangers went on the road for a quick trip to Chicago, Illinois, to face the Blackhawks as they celebrated their centennial season, both teams entering the 1926-27 season of the NHL. Both teams were wearing their special Centennial jerseys to evoke the old-time hockey feeling in the current NHL. After three periods were over, the Blackhawks shut out the Rangers by a final score of three to nothing.
Strong first period by the road team
The Rangers started this game very well. Both goaltenders were making fabulous saves to keep it scoreless, but there were two moments the Rangers should’ve scored and were thwarted by the far post when J.T. Miller tried to redirect a shot, then Mika Zibanejad went on a breakaway and was all alone. When he got to Spencer Knight, Zibanejad shot it through the five-hole, but the puck never went in the net as the angle was a little off from Knight, and the puck missed the far side of the net.
Hawks score short-handed
The Rangers were on the power play, and they tried to restart it at the far point to Mika Zibanejad. He lost control of the puck as the Hawks stripped it off his blade at the blue line. Then a mad scramble when Jason Dickinson got control, made a pass to Matt Grzelcyk, who saw Louis Crevier hanging around the Rangers’ blue line and went in alone. He snapped a shot over Igor Shesterkin’s right shoulder and scored at 7:08 of the second period short-handed.
Amazing goal by Bedard
The Rangers were skating hard to get the tying goal, but lost the puck behind the Hawks’ net. The home team went down the rink to look for a second goal. That’s when you saw the most amazing shot from such a talented young player. Andre Burakovsky got to the far corner and possessed the puck, throwing it to the middle of the ice. Coming out of nowhere was Conor Bedard, and he somehow got his blade on the puck and flipped it over Shesterkin’s left shoulder and in at 14:27 of the second period
Scramble at the net leads to a goal
The final goal of the night came from the Hawks as they were stick-fighting for the puck in the slot inside the Rangers’ zone. Going toward the far side was Tyler Bertuzzi as the puck slithered towards him, and all he did was flip it over the left pad of Shesterkin and inside the post at 3:52 of the third period. That was a poor display by the Rangers, failing to get control of the puck and make an attempt to clear it out of their end.
Point streak has come to an end.
With this loss, the Rangers’ four-game point streak has come to an end. They have converted six points in their last five games. They had their chances early, but failed to capitalize on the net. Spencer Knight made all 21 saves to get the shutout, and these young and exciting Chicago Blackhawks are turning a page.
Now the Rangers will return to Madison Square Garden as they take on the Montreal Canadiens for a Saturday Night game, as they will be donning their Centennial Jerseys once again for another special night of honoring former players who have worn the Broadway Blueshirt.
