A hard-fought contest until the second point was lost
New York, NY- The New York Rangers came back from the Capital of Canada to face the Colorado Avalanche on a Saturday Afternoon at Madison Square Garden. It was a fantastic hockey game that had action and end-to-end rushes. But inside the extra period, the Rangers just couldn’t hold back their opponents as they fell to the Avalanche in overtime by a final score of three to two.
Deflection from his knees
After some fabulous goaltending from Igor Shesterkin, the Avalanche were forced to retrieve the puck back into their own end. Martin Necas skated with the puck inside the Rangers’ zone and went around the end boards. He passed the puck back toward the far point to Sam Malinski, took a hard shot toward the net. At the same time, Parker Kelly was in front and knocked down, but stayed on his knees and found a way to deflect the puck past Shesterkin at 7:06 of the second period.
Tied game with Sheary on the break
The Rangers are trying to dig the puck out from the far corner, which was finally moved by J.T. Miller. He found Vincent Trocheck in the slot and skated up until Conor Sheary started to make a rush. Trocheck passed the puck to Sheary, and off to the races he went. From the far side to the near, Sheary entered the near faceoff circle and snapped a wicked wrist shot over the left shoulder of the goalie and in at 1:23 of the third period.
Swatted down just below the crossbar
The Avalanche was buzzing around the Rangers’ zone and held possession of the puck. As they worked the puck to the back end toward the blue line, Josh Manson at the near point made the pass to Martin Necas at the far point and ripped a hard shot. Shesterkin made the save, but the puck popped up in midair, where Nathan MacKinnon was at the far side of the net and smacked the puck in just below the crossbar at 15:26 of the third period
Last-minute wonder again
The Rangers pulled Shesterkin for the extra attacker and won the faceoff on the near side. Inside the final minute, Alexis Lafreniere got the puck after a quick scrum, skated toward the far boards. He passed the puck toward the far point to Mika Zibanejad, then he passed the puck to the near point to Artemi Panarin, who took the one-timer slapshot and nailed the bottom of the crossbar and in to tie the game again at 19:18 of the third period.
MacKinnon does it again for the second point
The overtime period was mostly dominated by the Avalanche with possession. But MacKinnon took charge inside the Rangers’ zone as he attacked with the puck in front of Will Borgen. Went from his forehand to his backhand and made the backhanded wrist shot to beat Shesterkin at 2:46 of overtime, and the Avalanche secured the second point.
Not a disappointing game
The Rangers played very well from the start to the finish. Yes, they didn’t get the second point in the overtime session, but this was one of the better-coached games from Mike Sullivan and a better performance at the Garden for the Rangers. They were beaten by a lucky deflection and a popped-up midair puck after a save, but overall, they fought on every shift and never backed down.
This was against the best team in the NHL, and they were just edged in overtime by one of the best players in the league. They were able to hang with the Dallas Stars at home, and they did edge them in overtime at the Garden. They couldn’t get a second point, but this hard-fought game was at least deserving of a point.
“I’m proud of the ups and downs today. Yeah, I thought we played a good game. I thought it was a really good hockey game. I thought our team played hard. I thought we were competitive all night. Obviously, we’re playing against one of the better teams in the league. I just thought it was a really good game.
You know, McKinnon is a handful. And he’s big, and he’s strong, and he’s powerful. And, you know, J.T. is big and strong and powerful also. And so we just felt. You know, it gives us the best chance to try to neutralize, you know, one of the more dynamic players in the league. You know, he’s going to get some looks. He’s too talented.
But I thought those guys did a great job against him most of the night. You know, he obviously scores the OT winner. You know, most of the night, those guys did a really good job, that they had a fair amount of offensive zone time, forcing them to have to defend, and I think that, you know, that’s a great form of defense, is just possessing the puck in the offensive zone,” said Head Coach Mike Sullivan.
