Last-minute goals in regulation and overtime drop the second point.
New York, NY- After a hard-fought game against the Avalanche on Saturday Afternoon, the Rangers came back to Madison Square Garden for a Sunday evening to take on the Vegas Golden Knights. Another hard-fought contest, but when they needed to hold on for the win, they lost the lead within the final minute of regulation, then lost it in the final minute of overtime by a final score of three to two.
Opening-minute goal in the opening period
After the Golden Knights won the faceoff to start the game, they quickly got into the Rangers’ zone to work the puck around. Jonathan Quick made the save, but the rebound was controlled again by the Golden Knights. Mark Stone was at the far point and sent a hard pass to the low near side of the net to Mitch Marner. He quickly finds Brett Howden at the far side of the net, and he scored at 36 seconds of the first period.
Mika’s second chance sweeps in
The Rangers started to cycle inside the Knights’ zone as they were looking for the tying goal and got it. They attempted some quick passes to set up Mika Zibanejad, but the shot was saved. The rebound was reclaimed, and the same passing sequence happened again. Artemi Panarin at the far boards goes back to the far point at Matthew Robertson. His shot deflects off Alexis Lafreniere, and then it deadens for Zibanejad to sweep it in at 9:08 of the second period.
It went clunk, not ping
The Rangers were on fire and kept skating hard in the middle period to try and get the lead. They finally did when Panarin had the puck skating up the far side, made a quick backward pass to Zibanejad at the far boards. He quickly made the crossice pass to Lafreniere, and he snapped it in. He shot it so hard it looked like he might have hit the crossbar and out, but the puck hit the back crossbar inside the net at 13:01 of the second period.
Last minute of regulation
The Rangers have found a late-minute goal in their last two games to get into overtime and either win it or drop the second point. This time, they had the lead, and the Golden Knights pulled their goalie for the extra attacker. When the announcement for the last minute of the period came, that’s when the Rangers lost the lead. A scramble in front of the net, and Tomas Hertl found the loose puck and swept it in at 19:08 of the third period.
Another overtime, another loss
It looked like the Rangers and the Golden Knights were going into the shootout, but unfortunately, the Golden Knights found a way to get the overtime winner. After Howden won the draw and gave it to Shea Theodore behind him, Theodore sent a long pass that angled off the far boards at the red line and bounced directly to Jack Eichel’s stick while on a breakaway. He stick handled at the net and beat Jonathan Quick at 4:52 of overtime to take the second point.
Frustrating back-to-back games
There were positives in their Saturday afternoon game with the overtime loss to the Avalanche, but in this one on Sunday evening against the Golden Knights, the Rangers should’ve had that second point. While there were some difficult decisions made by the officials, the truth is they should’ve defended a little bit better inside the final minute of the third period.
“Yeah, we clearly didn’t have our legs or energy in the first, but I thought that the guys responded really well after that. You know, we competed hard. I thought the second period we were the dominant team, so I was, you know, giving the guys a lot of credit for how we responded. You know, we got down a goal, and we just kept fighting. You know, I thought after the first, we competed really hard all night,” said Head Coach Mike Sullivan.
