NEW YORK, N.Y. – When the lights burn brightest at Madison Square Garden, college basketball delivers its purest drama. On Tuesday night, nearly 20,000 fans witnessed a battle worthy of the venue’s legend, as #5 UConn outlasted Florida 77-73 in a game that left hearts pounding and voices hoarse.
The Stage: Champions Collide in the World’s Most Famous Arena
The buzz in the Garden was electric—the last three national champions clashing, blue and orange and Husky white swirling in the stands.“That’s the moment you come to UConn for—playing in a game where it’s the last three national champions going at it in the most famous arena,” Alex Karaban said. “To have that special moment was awesome.”

First Half: Huskies Strike, Gators Counter
UConn set the tone early, hitting 59% from the field in the opening half, but Florida’s grit was evident. Xaivian Lee attacked the rim, Thomas Haugh and Alex Condon hammered the boards, and Rueben Chinyelu battled for every loose ball.“I thought we did a great job on the glass, but didn’t capitalize,” Gators coach Todd Golden reflected. “We out-rebounded by 12, had 16 offensive rebounds to their seven, and had fewer second-chance points. That’s something we’ve got to capitalize on.”
Boogie Fland’s Homecoming: Big Apple Lights, Bronx Blues
For Florida’s Boogie Fland, this was supposed to be a triumphant return to his New York roots—a chance to shine in front of 200 friends and family at Madison Square Garden. The Bronx native and Archbishop Stepinac High School legend (by way of Arkansas before Florida) was met with high expectations and the hopes of an entire section in the stands. Instead, the night became a harsh lesson in the unforgiving glare of the Garden lights.
Fland, who fouled out after just 23 minutes, managed only 8 points—a far cry from the star turn so many anticipated. With every whistle and every missed opportunity, the pressure mounted. Ultimately, the young man who once owned the courts of White Plains found himself overwhelmed by the moment, unable to deliver the heroics his hometown crowd craved. Sometimes, the city that made you can break you, too—but the story of Boogie Fland is still being written, and New York will be watching.
Second Half: Garden Turns Into a Cauldron
The Gators roared back, slicing into the lead behind Lee’s relentless drives and Haugh’s clutch shooting. The crowd rose with every Florida run, but UConn’s depth answered. Freshman Braylon Mullins, benched by early fouls, exploded in the second half.“For a young player to put that first half behind him and do what [Mullins] did in the second half—it shows his quality. He’s a beast,” Dan Hurley marveled.
Karaban’s timely threes and Solo Ball’s fearless attacks kept UConn afloat.“The strength of our team is just the depth and how you can just go to the bench, and there’s no drop-off,” Mullins said. “Those are shots you work on, shots you dream of taking.”
The Final Minutes: Every Possession a War
With the game on a knife’s edge, every rebound, every whistle, every shot felt seismic. Florida’s defense clamped down, holding UConn to 41% in the second half. The Gators clawed within three, but UConn’s poise under pressure—and a controversial inbounds violation called on Florida with seconds left—sealed the outcome. “I thought they called [the inbounds violation] early, to be honest. Usually, they give you an extra second. It’s a tough pill to swallow,” Golden said, frustration and pride mixing in his voice.
Respect Earned, Lessons Learned
After the final horn, both teams stood tall.“It’s an honor to share the court with Florida. Coach Golden is a champion. Their program is one of the premier programs in modern college basketball,” Hurley said. “This is a deep team… When you have nine quality players, you can survive an off night from multiple people and still get enough scoring to win.”
Golden, ever the optimist, saw the value in defeat: “Against an elite opponent, we did a lot of good things, but not quite good enough to get over the hump… We’re close, man. We’re right there. If we can get 5% better here over the next couple of weeks, we’re gonna be pretty good in SEC play.”
Xaivian Lee, Florida’s leader, soaked in the moment: “It’s an incredible opportunity. Obviously, playing against great teams, I’d like to win more. But I’ve been trying to soak it all in and play well. MSG is one of the best venues in the world.”
