NEW YORK, N.Y. – On a night when basketball was about more than points and wins, No. 10 BYU delivered a comeback for the ages at Madison Square Garden, stunning Clemson 67-64 at the buzzer in the Jimmy V Classic. From the opening tip to the final horn, the Garden pulsed with energy, hope, and the echo of Jim Valvano’s “never give up.”
Madison Square Garden: A Night Like No Other
The world’s most famous arena was alive with anticipation, every seat filled with fans, survivors, and families touched by cancer. The Jimmy V Classic is more than a game—it’s a cause, a memory, and a promise. BYU forward AJ Dybantsa, who had never played at MSG, said it best: “This is my first time stepping foot in the Garden. I’m from Boston. We have another Garden over there that I’m pretty much used to. This is like the Mecca. It was a surreal feeling to be able to play here.”
Tigers Unleash, Cougars Stunned
From the opening minutes, Clemson played with fire. Their 21-0 run left BYU searching for answers, the arena stunned into near silence. “I thought we were kind of blank and a little lifeless in the first half, honestly,” BYU coach Kevin Young admitted. “I challenged the guys to come out more with a competitive spirit.”
Clemson’s defense was suffocating, and the Tigers’ bench roared with every stop. “I thought we played outstanding first 20 minutes and had them frustrated,” Clemson coach Brad Brownell said. “Second half, they flipped the script… I’m proud of our guys. I thought our guys fought like crazy.”

Halftime in the Bowels of the Garden
In the locker room, Young’s message was urgent. “Our trench warfare mentality was much better in the second half,” he said. “We’ve been in this situation too many times this year. Our second half has been ridiculously efficient and effective… We scored 45 points in the second half. It was pretty impressive.”
For Dybantsa, the break was about composure: “Just be patient. Don’t get too down on yourself if you’re missing shots in the first half. You’ve still got another 20 minutes to go. I’m super confident in my ability, and I trust all the work I put in.”
The Comeback Begins
When the Cougars emerged, the energy had shifted. Dybantsa attacked relentlessly, scoring 22 of his 28 after halftime. “They decided not to double me in the second half, so I picked my spot smarter. Not trying to fade as much, just trying to rise above the defense,” he explained. Keita hammered home four dunks, and the BYU bench exploded with every stop. The crowd, sensing a comeback, roared with every run.

Clemson’s Response
Clemson didn’t wilt. Jestin Porter and RJ Godfrey hit tough shots, and the Tigers’ bench stayed loud. “We’re a resilient group. We’re built on toughness and grit. So we know the game’s never over,” said Clemson’s Dillon Hunter. “We believe no lead is safe, no game is over, we’re going to fight until the end.”
The Final Minutes: Every Possession, Every Heartbeat
With five minutes left, the Garden was a cauldron of nerves and hope. Wright drove the lane, Keita battled for boards, and Dybantsa pulled up for jumper after jumper. “You’ve got to have trust in your teammates. It doesn’t matter what the play is; it doesn’t matter if I had 50 that game. Whoever is open gets the ball. That’s the kind of trust we have in our team,” Dybantsa said.
Clemson tied it at 64 with five seconds left. Timeout, BYU. The building held its breath. “The play, AJ, wasn’t open. He was getting double-teamed. That told me I’ll be coming back to the ball. He just trusted me, and the shot went in,” Wright recalled. “Not a three. I never had a buzzer beater that’s a three. That was the first one.”
The Shot, The Roar, The Aftermath
As Wright’s shot splashed through the net, the Garden erupted—the sound, the joy, the disbelief. BYU’s bench poured onto the court. Dybantsa, arms raised, was mobbed by teammates. “The horn sounded, the net snapped, and the Cougars mobbed Wright as the Garden erupted.”
More Than a Game
On a night dedicated to fighting cancer, BYU’s comeback was a living tribute to Valvano’s legacy. “This was more than a win,” Young said. “It was about belief. About never giving up.”
