Big backhander on the rebound gets the win over second-best in the league
New York, NY- After losing Adam Fox to Long Term Injured Reserve over the weekend against the Lightning, the New York Rangers returned to Madison Square Garden for a big Tuesday night matchup against a well-coached and tough side in the Dallas Stars. It took an extra period, but the Rangers were able to grab a big second point as they defeated the Stars in Overtime by a final score of three to two.
Out of the box and into the net
The Rangers killed off the Dallas Power Play as Carson Soucy got out of the box. Conor Sheary retrieved the puck inside his own zone and sprung both Soucy and Noah Laba into a two-on-one. Soucy went down the far side and passed it to Laba, took the shot, it was stopped, but leaked out. Soucy hustled for the rebound and slammed it home ten seconds after the Rangers killed the penalty at 6:51 of the first period.
Point shot goes in
The Stars were looking to tie the game up in the opening period, and they did so with a scramble in front of Igor Shesterkin. After several shots were taken, the Rangers tried to clear the puck out of their zone. Valdislav Gavrikov tried to attempt a clear, but he gave it back to Kyle Capobianco at the far point. Capobianco took a hard wrist shot back on net and beat Shesterkin at 9:04 of the first period.
Costly mishap leads to a Dallas goal
It was a thrilling game as both sides were trying to get the lead. The Rangers had a double minor Power Play and were thwarted by Casey DeSmith. But they relented when J.T. Miller lost control of the handle and allowed the Stars to skate into a two-on-one. Wyatt Johnston down the far side made the crossice pass to Mikko Rantanen, and he sweeps it in at 9:32 of the third period.
Shesterkin pulled, tied the game
With 2:23 left in the third period, and the faceoff inside the near circle, the Rangers pulled Shesterkin for an extra attacker. They won the faceoff and rimmed the puck around the boards, all the way to the far point. Artemi Panarin keeps the puck in, sends it toward the net. Deflected in front by Vincent Trocheck, saved by DeSmith, but the rebound went towards Will Cuylle. With a turnaround rebound shot, Cuylle scores the tying goal at 17:47 of the third period
Overtime winner at the Garden
After the Stars lost the puck on their first rush of the extra session, the Rangers got the puck and entered the Stars’ zone. Mika Zibanejad skates into the zone, a quick pass to Panarin, then a hard shot is saved by DeSmith, leaving a rebound for Vladislav Gavrikov on a quick backhander that gets the winner at 1:04 of the Overtime period.
A huge win and a strong performance
The Rangers played very well in this game against the Stars. Their penalty kill was fabulous, as the Stars’ power play is very strong and dangerous. They only conceded two penalties, both by Carson Soucy, and skated hard to stay stride for stride with the Stars until they came away with the second point in overtime. Igor Shesterkin made 24 saves out of 26 shots on goal, and now they will make a quick trip to the capital of Canada against the Ottawa Senators.
“I just think it certainly reinforces the game we’re trying to play when you have success. You know, I thought the guys played hard all night. I thought we competed hard. Against a really good team. You know, given the fact that the way the third period went, I felt like we were controlling play there pretty well in the third. We had a couple of really good looks.
We hit the post, and right before they come down and score. you know given the given the fact that it’s been a bit of a struggle to find wins here in this building that could have that could have affected the group in a negative way and i give the players a lot of credit because i think there was a certain determination in their mindset tonight that that that wasn’t gonna wasn’t going to beat us and I just love the response and just the stick-to-itiveness to you know to continue to push and look for that next goal.
Obviously, we get a great six-on-five goal. It’s just good play by everybody involved. And then the overtime, the overtime winner, the same thing. I’m happy for the players because obviously they care a lot about winning, but they care in particular a lot about winning at home. So I couldn’t be happier for the guys. I think they worked hard, and I think they earned it,” said Head Coach Mike Sullivan.
