Playing from behind all game
Las Vegas, NV-The New York Rangers began their three-game road trip to the Rocky Mountains as they made their first trip to Sin City agasint the Vegas Golden Knights. Instead of getting the jackpot, the Rangers hit tilt all game long as they fell to Vegas by the final score of three to two.
Knights take the lead
Vegas gets the power play going by winning the draw. As they kept the puck inside the Rangers’ zone, Mitch Marner at the near point took the shot. Tomas Hertl in front tried to deflect it in, but Shesterkin made the save, the rebound went to Braeden Bowman at the near post, and he stuffed home the rebound at 11:40 of the first period.
Vegas makes it two, and something strange happened
The Golden Knights made it two when they had the puck down low at the near corner. As they skated at the near boards, a quick pass from Hertl to Pavel Dorofeyev at the near point saw Ben Hutton trailing the play. He made the pass to Ben Hutton, as he shot it and trickled through Shesterkin’s pads and in at 3:23 of the second period.
Something strange happened on that play to J.T. Miller. He was defending the play until, somehow, he peeled off and slowed down. Either he pulled a muscle or had an equipment issue. But that was a strange moment to see him stop defending the puck inside his own zone.
Rangers pulled one back
The Rangers found a way to get on the scoreboard as they stole the puck away from the Golden Knights at center ice. A two-on-one formed when Will Cuylle attacked down the far side, took the shot, which was saved, by Jonny Brodzinsky was with Cuylle and smacked home the rebound to cut the deficit to one at 8:56 of the second period.
Another Power Play Goal
Vegas got on another power play, and they were very active. Colton Sissons gave the puck to Shea Theodore at the far point, then he skated across the top of the Rangers’ zone. Passed the puck back and forth with Noah Hanifi. He finally took the shot at the top of the near faceoff circle and beat Shesterkin at 7:18 of the third period.
Rangers get a second
Mike Sullivan pulled Shesterkin for an extra man and got a second goal. J.T. Miller at the near boards found Artemi Panarin at the top of the zone. He ripped a hard shot that was deflected in front by Vincent Trocheck for their second goal of the game at 17:17 of the third period.
That would be the last time the Rangers threatened in the game and fell to start this three-game road trip. The hope is they can do better against a red-hot Avalanche team in their next game. Akira Schmid made 17 saves out of 19 shots on goal for the win.
WILL CUYLLE: Has tallied an assist in back-to-back games and has five points through his last five games (3G-2A). He ranks fourth on the Rangers in assists (6) and tied for third in points (12).
VINCENT TROCHECK: Notched his third goal of the season and his second since returning to the ice on Nov. 10. He has five points through his last five games (3G-2A).
ARTEMI PANARIN: Notched an assist on Vincent Trocheck’s goal. He has tallied an assist in four-straight games (7) and improved his point streak to five games (9). He has tallied 12 points (3G-9A) through his last seven games.
